Without military safety briefings, are you surprised you survived childhood?

Some of us are more accident prone than others. Some of us are lucky that we made it through our childhood alive! What is the image from childhood that haunts your memories? I experienced electric fences in the WORST possible ways as a dumb kid. Those toys from the 70's have left scars all over me! Share your experiences.

Never rode in a car seat
Never wore seatbelts (until I started driving)
Rode in the back of station wagons & pickups (while it was legal)
Never wore a helmet when riding a bike (until I had kids)
Walked to elementary school on my own
Walked to the local mart to buy cigarettes for the old man
Played ball in the street almost daily
How the hell did I make it this far???

We are raising people to be victims. We talk about resiliency but are not teaching people how to stand up for themselves (without making it a federal case) and bounce back from set backs.

Remember when we took responsibility for what we did? We have the scars, but it made up better people. We don't need the government to protect us from everything that they feel they should.

There is a difference between risk mitigation and risk aversion. Society thinks they are mitigating, but the reality is they are teaching aversion.

Define "from." I lived here for about 15 years. Then moved away for a decade. Came back in 2011. Never really claimed it as home, though. You?

Remember thinking 25 was old? When I hit 20, 30 was old. When I hit 30, 60 was old. I'm nearing 40 and 85 is old. The gap had been widening and I never even realized it.
I remember telling someone, "I'm 19 and I wish I could be 19 forever." And the fact that this was SIXTEEN years ago blows my mind.
Just can't believe I'm nearly 35 already. Ridiculous.

SSgt (Join to see), yeah. It's always going to be "home." I was born there. My parents were too. We moved away because my dad was Army and ultimately came back, until it was my turn to join the service.
I've lived away from home now for 13 years, but Oklahoma isn't home to me. For my kids, it is...just not to me.

Well statistically speaking I was supposed to be either be dead, on drugs or in jail by 21.

Very surprised. I spent almost 5 months in the hospital due to all the different injuries I endured while having "FUN" as a child. My poor mother sure had her hands full. The medical bills were crazy $$$.

PO3 Shaun Taylor...well, dayum. I just finished the book "There Are No Children Here." Where did you grow up, just out of sheer academic curiosity.

Definitely. I drowned when I was eight, but was revived by a lifeguard who saw me go under. My older brother nearly killed me accidentally dozens of times. I also was saved from a vicious dog attack by my neighbor, Gary Gordon. Gary ran up to the dog just as it was about to rip me apart and hit it with a stick and got it to chase him. He yelled at me to run and I ran like the wind. Gary went on to join Delta Force and received the MOH posthumously.

Gary's father and my father were coffee drinking friends. He refused to shake Clinton's hand when he received the MOH. (He was a veteran himself). He died shortly after that. Gary 'a mom christened a Navy ship from the pre-position fleet and I have worked explosive loadouts on it. I have been to his grave several times and to the MOH museum on the Yorktown, but I have never watched the movie....someday maybe....but I known how it ends.

They did a good job and were very respectful, but I'd stay away. It was a rough movie to watch.

It is a very hard movie to watch and I usually watch it when I see its on. Many brave men sacrificed their lives so that others may live. In 2nd Bn 10th SFG(A) Fort Carson there is a little memorial for both Gary Gordon and Randy Shugart. Valor like what they displayed is seldom seen.

There was a song about this a couple years back called "Back When" by Tim McGraw on the "Live Like You Were Dying" album.

I was in the ER more than everyone else in my family combined (5 others including parents)
I'm surprised they didn't yell "MARC" when I walked in!

I am amazed I survived drinking from a garden hose, playing outside, having no internet, etc. How did we do it.
We did chase behind the bug spray man's truck on our bicycles only to find out much later they were spraying DDT. It smelled so good though!
