Even if the CSM is wrong, there's a tactful and professional way to handle that, then, there's this way. Just like there's a difference between saying "hey CSM, just wanted to let you know your boot's unbloused" and saying "hey, guy, fix yourself."

Under the uniform code of military justice, the short answer is yes. However, those of us who know how things are really done and where respect is really earned.

I think the word "attention" can be used in a fashion to where it feels like you're in control of a situation. No matter what your grade is or how many days you have left in the service, disrespect is disrespect. What goes for a private should go for an SGM/CSM

One of the best moments in my enlistment...
2nd LT walks by a MSgt and CWO3 talking. Neither salute
Lt: So neither of you have the intention of saluting an officer today?
MSgt: Sir, you can have our salute when you climb up our rockers to get it.
Lt walks away speechless.

I'd have come to attention right in his face and he'd have squirmed like the worm he is. I spent my last 10 years training officers and it's not hard to put them in their place without being insubordinate.

01 can call an E9 to attention, not advisable but hey if he has the testicular fortitude to do so better stand by for heavy rolls afterwards
