Would you correct somebody you don't know in the gym? If so, what would be your approach?

I'm usually at the gym when the owner is around. He'd catch it LONG before I would....

SGT(P) (Join to see) - This is true. I have been out since 2007, and the last on-post gym I had easy access to was on VBC. Now I have to pay for it.

I usually just show them up.
Had a guy at my local gym who was squatting in a squat rack where he would sit down on a bench with about 300lbs. He was doing something in the realm of 8 or so sets, because that is what he read in his latest fitness magazine on what he needed to do I would wager. I asked if I could rotate in for a set (and this guy has three inches and about 15 pounds on me). He told me that would be fine and asked if I wanted any of the weight taken off. I responded that the weight would be fine (I had been squatting 350), pushed the bench out of the way, and slammed out twelve butt to calves squats. I then racked the weight, thanked the guy and walked off to my next exercise. His buddies were howling with laughter.

Some people love the ones with the special cleated shoes that clip directly into the pedal, but I prefer the outside-the-shoe straps that allow me footwear flexibility.

SFC James Sczymanski - I will sometimes do lunges with dumbells, but I gotta be really motivated.

SFC James Sczymanski Oh yeah. Good thing there are standing desks at work.
Sitting in the car to drive TO work after the gym? That's another story altogether.

1LT Brian Godwin I guess I just don't like doing half reps or resting in the middle of them, which was what I was seeing. I try to get the full range of motion for the full effect.

When I am at the gym I do not usually pay attention to what others are doing unless it effects me.

SFC (Join to see) you have to post it in FB with a picture of the soldier you corrected.

Not unless they've got that, I could use a hand look or if you know the person beforehand.

PO2 Brendan McCarthy I use the look, sometimes it works, sometimes they look back like, mind your business.

And I have. I just tell them "while I am no expert on anything, I do know you are doing [blank] wrong, and should ... . Try it that way and see how it feels."
If they choose to ignore me, I won't offer help again. No harm done.

I qualify the Yes, I would with only if it is going to get the person hurt. If it just looks like shit, but is not going to cause damage immediately then go for it champ, you do what you think is right.

I wouldn't correct anyone. If someone would like to learn how to work out, then there are various resources for that. For example: your buddies, personal trainers, or websites such as bodybuilding.com. I don't go to the gym for social hour.

I go to the gym by myself, I can't wait for nobody. I go, I train, I leave, that's it SSG (Join to see).

Terminal Lance - Terminal Lance #334 “Exhaust Fumes”
You could probably make an entire comic series out of morning PT alone. The daily ritual is so fraught with simultaneously monotonous and unique experiences, it’s a wonder I haven’t done more on the subject. As most of you are aware, I’m sure, you generally have to run morning PT in a formation of some kind so your squad, section or platoon doesn’t look like a total bag of dicks sweating across the base. As such, one of the dangers is...

I've had people come up to me and correct the way I was doing something before. I just politely thank them and move to a different area of the gym. Frankly when I'm working out, I really don't want strangers coming up and correcting me unless they are a certified trainer. I know I would not try to tell someone else how to do their workout. I don't consider myself an expert in that field, so I wouldn't do it unless they were doing something clearly unsafe.

Ma'am, I've learned from mistakes. I got no certification but, unfortunately, nowadays is really easy to get one. I wouldn't correct a training program, like if I see you switching machines or so but if I see that you can get injured I would tell you something. LTC Hillary Luton

SGT Antonio Camacho We all have made mistakes and hopefully we all learn from them. I appreciate you would want to keep a fellow Soldier safe, but just be careful how you go about it. Not everyone is eager to be corrected, even if it would protect them from injury. Just like you may not appreciate me correcting your grammar, even though I may be trying to help you in future promotions and positions, I may not appreciate you correcting my form at the gym, even if it would prevent me from getting hurt. Good intentions are admirable, but not always received as intended.
