Would you donate to a Veterans Non-Profit Corporation that's not 501c tax exempt and if not why?

SPC Darin Taylor I donate to those organizations that I have checked out and believe in. Over the years, the organizations that I support have changed. Are you involved with this non profit corporation, and why is it not tax exempt?

What is the difference between nonprofit and tax exempt?
There is a big difference between nonprofit and tax exempt. Nonprofit is state law concept; tax exempt deals with IRS and state taxing issues.

Yes. The Non-Profit Veterans Organization - Disabled Vet Assistance -was established by myself. I have not been able to afford the high cost of applying for my 501c. I would like to do so, but have not been able to as of yet.

It depends how transparent they are. The nice thing about a 501c is if their annual intake is normally more than $50k a year, they have to make a public financial disclosure that will show, to some extent, how the money is being used.
Any reasonable size organization that is only in the business of being a charity will likely be a 501c. If they are not a 501c, I'd want to know what other activities they do that may disqualify them for 501c status. For example a common reason for not achieving a 501c status would be if they engaged in political activity in an election. If that's the case I'd want to know how much of my money is going to that and if I'm OK with whomever they are supporting.

The 501c tax piece of the question is a little over my head, but I tend to make my charity donations based on the business and what they pledge to do with the money. I've always given to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

My Non-Profit Veterans Organization - Disabled Vet Assistance- is Chartered by the State of TN. My website has been a source of information for Veterans to use and I've been able to assist Veterans from several States in locating a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) near them. I have not been able to afford the high cost of applying for 501c, but the few donations that I've received have gone towards the assistance of my fellow Veterans.

if it's not a 501(c)3 i would be suspicious of the organization. there are too many organizations out here profiting off the support/sympathy civilians have for the military.

I do agree that some Non-profit organizations are actually scamming people for a profit. My Non-profit organization is dedicated to the full support of Veterans. I have not been able to afford the cost to apply for my 501c3, but I plan to as soon as I am able. This has been a road block for any support through donations.

SPC Darin Taylor - Unfortunately, you will have issues such as i pointed out. Have you considered coming under some umbrella organization?

No, I haven't but that's a good idea to look into until I can get the 501c for my Non-profit
