4. blank Cds since you can't have thumb drives.

5. Memorized answers to mandatory training flip through online course and go directly to the test since you will waste 40 hour a year redoing them and the tests don't change much. information assurance and related, personnel recovery, drug and alcohol awarenes and related, human trafficing, sexual harrassment/EO etc ad nauseum etc...

6. Remember to not use your CAC card at a unit you are visiting since it is an over-compartmentalized unit that has too many layers of security or you have a world-wide lockout because even if you have a CAC that is registered, some segment the military still treats you like a child and you are locked out of any dod computer. This is a big gripe since it happened to me. Ask before you put a CAC card in a cac reader at a unit you are not familar with.

You got to be shitting me right? Hell, I was a Vietnam Combat Vet. I mean WTF-Over!. Small arms expert, kill or be killed, and strong leadership skills! That's why I became a NH Trooper. It was either that or a mercenary? I think I made the right choice!

Michael but how do you communicate "alot" of your transferrable skills when you may only have an hour with a potential employer?

CW3 Dylan E. Raymond, PHR - Well, if I were applying for an animal care position it would be quite easy, take far less than one hour, and has already gained me two different jobs in the past. When I applied at the zoo as an assistant zookeeper, they asked my experiences. I just ticked off the types of duties I had as a vet tech in the military, but I think the biggest factor was the discipline in following orders. Because as you may have read recently about the zookeeper who was killed because she failed to follow protocol. My knowledge of animal care was one part, but the ability to follow specific instructions was another.

This may seem like a broad question and arguably speaking all things can be transferable. The questions I post are designed to get the community engaging with one another, speaking out loud. We all have opinions and points of view that are important to learning and opportunities for growth and I appreciate them all and hope the community does as well. I am a fortune 500 recruiter and a bilingual (fluent military and civilian speak) military to civilian transition expert and try to pose question that are real and relevant that you can add into your tool box. At the end of the day I want the community to take away some information that will educate, empower and improve their individual transition plan.

My 3 transferrable skills are
-Master collaborator
-Multi-tasker
-Complex problem Solver

This does not mean that these are my only 3 just the 3 strong ones that I can develop my 30 second commercial when I am speaking to potential employers. I am very clear on how I cant help them. If I try to explain more than 3 it will be overwhelming and the brain cant conceptualize more than that effectively. The hiring manager/potential employer is trying to figure out how you will fit in and fix their problems. So you do not have to be a "jack of all trades" "master of none", CEO and founder of I can do it all, Inc.

Remember more does not mean it is better. I will use an analogy when firing your weapon you can do just as much damage with the M-16 on 3 round burst vs full automatic. You just want to tighten your shot group with what you have to offer and deliver it.

So in closing know you audience, what their needs are and determine how your transferable skills will fix their problems. So sit down today and think about what you are really, really good at and let the employer know you are good.
