I recycled mountains during Best Ranger! I however think I had one of the last easy courses. We could dip and smoke back then!

We also could smoke and dip. Didn't realize that was no longer authorized. I recall smoking Marlboro 100s and cutting off the filters to maximize the nicotine.

COL Sam Russell - The tobacco band started in the early 2000's. Ranger students are only allowed 10 packs of gum now. I remember hearing guys dumping out Red Man pouches and filling it with Copenhagen back in the day!

Your Florida phase experience sounds just like mine, except instead of humping the pig I was the AB and the AG. Our platoon was down to about 27 people and we only had enough guys for 2 man gun teams. I had the old school, ridiculously heavy tripod and pintle, plus probably 800 rounds of 7.62. It was unbearable. I was stuck in a swamp a little lower than waist high. I think it was Gumdrop. We would take two steps and stand there for 10 minutes. It literally took hours to make it through. I wanted to quit. I even cried a little crocodile tear. But, I realized no one was going to fly a jungle penetrator down to pull me out. If I refused to carry my ruck my squad would have to carry it. So, I shut up and carried on to the other side of the swamp where there was just no point in quitting.
For the girls, they didn't repeat the whole school, they did Darby twice then had a Day 1 insert. But, I commend anyone with the fortitude to redo RAP week after two phases of Ranger School.

I was fortunate to get all GO's on all the phases. However, I was a highly trained NCO in Land Navigation and did the OPORDs the way they taught. I was alway either point or compass man on patrols when not in a leadership position or humping the radio or the damn pig. I even hit the exact rope bridge site in Florida in the dark in ass deep water. I got a major minue for sleeping while dead in Darby and 2 major pluses, one for saving a student life, he was stung about a 100 time by ground bees which his pulse was 120 plus. I mainlined the bee sting scringe and got him stablized. The other was for the rope bridge. I got cellulitus the last week in Florida and was sent back to the hospital. I graduated an Honor Graduate. My Troop Sergeant Major was pleased. Had I flunked or had a self inflicted injury, I'd been ordered out of the Unit. The major thing I learned from the experience is you have to get physical with troops to motrivate them. I had to pull our chapolin off a guy that caused him to fail his critical patrol. Padre was beating the hell out of him. We got him Tabbed on the next patrol. All my guys were tabbed nbefore the main water assault I learned there is a reason for no rank in Ranger School; fights happen! I had a good squad of Battalion Babies. Ranger Unit Privates are the best in the Army. Better than some sergeants I had to deal with in the regular army that were just slugs. Germany was ate up with worms, privates, SP4s & NCOs which was my treason to get into Special Operations. The officers were amoung the best!
