In her latest, Perino tells stories about life and politics--and how dogs can transcend rancor and partisanship. She also talks about how dogs bring together families--like Dana's own from her career in Washington through her life in television. How will the media rebuild trust with the public? How hard and long is the media going to be back paddling with the election of Mr. Trump? Its seems that only Fox was the major news source that gave him a chance. How do we allow the others like CNN to survive after the tampering of the election?

Interesting to me how pervasive distrust is with the media. That has been building for some time. Again I'd suggest that to the extent possible people find a way to consume a variety of news. Believe it or not, as a former WH press secretary, I truly believe that the reporters did try to be fair. I also believe the media is essential for holding the government accountable. I have a pretty thick skin for "bad" news, though. Thankfully the president I worked for did, too. He never yelled at me for a negative story. And if fact he'd often tell me, "It wasn't as bad as you thought it would be."

Good afternoon, Dana. In the early pages of your book AND THE GOOD NEWS IS... you gave a quick take on how you wound up where you have; that being in the right place at the right time accounted for much of your career. How much of this would you say is putting the road in God's hands by not saying "No"? I'm a pretty firm believer that by taking just a few chances to say "Yes" (or even "Maybe") you may open a long string of positives. But you can't get to the end of that string if you don't take that first chance.

Interesting that you bring this up. Over the past couple of months I've found myself falling back into that old bad habit of trying to plan too far ahead. What did I learn when I wrote And the Good News Is? That when I tried to plan out my life, God had other ideas - and they turned out to be much better than mine! Trusting is tough, but it's the best way. I agree that taking chances is so good. You know what it's like to have to move around a lot since you are in the military - but a lot of people don't move. They stay where they are, regardless of the opportunities or lack there of in that area. I am a big proponent of moving, taking jobs that you never would have thought to take. Besides, you can always come home again - home is where they have to take you in, as the saying goes. I think the biggest chance I took was on love. I met my husband on an airplane and moved to England to be with him - and now, 20 years later, I realize that was the best risk I ever took. My favorite advice from And the Good News Is was, "Choosing to be loved is not a career limiting deacon." And in fact, for me, it was what made all the difference.
