Dana Perino Welcome and thanks for joining us again, do you have any comments on the recent revelations of workplace harassment at Fox? What lessons do you think we can take from these incidents to maintain productive, inclusive, team-based workplaces in our own leadership in the future?

I feel that 21 Century Fox handled the allegations well. I was not a target of any abuse, but I have met some who were and my heart goes out to them. I think things are better on that front, but my eyes were opened to the problem. I believe that other companies' eyes were opened, too. So we can all do our party to stop that kind of behavior at the workplace.

Love your quiet, calm, intelligent comments on The Five. Your perspective adds a depth of understanding to the current events. Thank you!

Thanks so much - I try to be calm. It takes a lot to get me riled up. I think that's because after I was the press secretary I said nothing I do for the rest of my life will be that hard or that important. That's true. Working at the White House gave me Perspective with a capital P!

Dana Perino, it must have been a great help to have worked under Tony Snow - he too was calm, charitable, and unflappable regardless of the provocation. I think he was one of the very top newsmen of my generation, and I think you fit well on his team.

Hi Dana, and thanks for visiting the Forum. Who do you think President elect Trump will pick for his Press Secretary?

Dana Perino
I'm not sure who he will choose, but I would say there are three essential things he needs in a press secretary (ok maybe four): someone he trusts implicitly. someone who understands policy. someone who has access to the president and the decision makers so they can explain decisions (not everyone will agree on decisions but they should be able to respect the decision making process). and someone with a sense of humor!

Dana Perino - Thanks for taking time to do this Q&A! I really appreciate it. I do have some questions:
1) What will it take to get REAL, HONEST (non-partisan) news back into the MSMs?
2) How would you suggest talking to those who are closed minded (on any subject)?
3) What do you think of Irish Wolfhounds? :)

see above for the news question.
when it comes to close-minded people re: issues, find out if they have a dog. That's a safe topic!
I love Irish Wolfhounds. They're so majestic. And TALL!

First, thank you for being a terrific role model. My daughter is a Journalism major graduating with honors who has hit the ground running. In addition to admiring your career for many years, I've especially appreciated the insights you share on 'The Five'.
After an election, donors/lobbyists begin their infiltration of the system. Having a self-funded, winning campaign that owes little to no favors creates an intriguing situation where qualifications trump party affiliation. Obviously, the hope is that smart people are put in the right place(s). Can you elaborate on the pros/cons of the new administrations absence of political pay-back?

This is a good question. The transition is underway and that's an exciting time. I like this part better than the campaigning! There is a vetting process that needs to happen - and there will be some people who donated to the campaign(s) who will want to have their issues addressed (such as in the financial sector and Dodd-Frank in particular). My experience in Washington was pretty positive, and the people i met really did believe in public service, so I'm optimistic that from a policy perspective there will be advances that help make government run better and in a way that will help the country move forward on a range of issues. We have a lot of challenges - the ones we know are really tough, the ones we can't see are the ones I really worry about. Expect the unexpected (and that's why you need good people). There are about 20 national security positions that should NEVER be vacant. Transitions can be periods for instability. That's why it was heartening to hear that the Obama team wants to run as professional a transition as we did in 2008. It's critical for national security (and it's polite!)

What role, if any, do you believe that the mainstream media has played in the civil unrest, protesting, and rioting that is plaguing our nation today and what do you feel that responsible news organizations can do to help bring peace and unity back to our communities?

This is a tough question - because there were instances of protests, which got media coverage, which could have fueled more protests. But I don't think the answer is that the media shouldn't cover the news. I do think the press must be wary and on guard for any hoaxes trying to stir up unrest - that's really important. And I've been dismayed reading about fake news that was spread on social media - that is a terrible trend. The media's job is to observe and report, not to sugarcoat or ignore (which I know you aren't suggesting). Because there are so many ways to get news today, we are in for a rocky ride for a while. New technologies are pushing lots of boundaries. I'm not sure where all of this leads. What I do know is that in my own reporting and analyzing I am responsible for what I say and how I say it. Tone matters to me. I'm big on manners and civility. Some say I'm too nice - but I can't help it!

It is a tough question, and I thank you for your honest response. I appreciate your attitude of owning your responsibility as a journalist. The world would be a much better place if ALL of us owned our responsibilities, wouldn't it? :) Honesty and integrity seem to be in limited supply in our world today, and I respect you for yours. Thanks again.

Dana Perino , it is truly an honor to have you with us; here on Rally Point. Thank you for being here with us.
Jasper, looks and sounds adorable.
My black cat, Emily, is adoring and most therapeutic/cathartic: when it comes to my tears.
She physically lays her body, on, for instance: my back or my arm; when I am upset.
Sending hugs to you and Jasper-

This morning I was having a mini-rant about my schedule because it's a little...packed...at the moment, and Peter was listening and trying not to laugh because he thinks it's cute when I get worked up, but Jasper was not happy. He was rushing back and forth between us, his tail going like crazy, and I realized I was upsetting him. So I bent down to comfort him and BAM! my stress went away in an instant. That's one of the reasons I think Jasper and Henry helped us have a strong marriage - when they're around (which is always...and I mean ALWAYS) we are kinder to each other and speak more gently. We also do a ridiculous amount of baby dog talk. My favorite chapter in the book is one I wrote in Jasper's voice called "A Day in the Life of Jasper." Hope you get a chance to check it out!

Ms. Perino,
Thank you for making yourself available on the RP forum. My dog is Luke, he is a Shelter dog that we adopted and has been fantastic for my wife, Melissa, and our four children, while I have been deployed overseas.
I encourage families to look for a shelter dog to adopt, so many opportunities to match needs.
For military families and veterans, service dogs are a great comfort, do you have any experiences with service dogs from your time in the white house that you would like to share?

Thank you for asking. Actually, a portion of the proceeds of Let Me Tell You About Jasper is going to support a group that I have been a part of for several years - Companions for Heroes. It was started by Dave Sharpe - he served his country with honor. When he returned he suffered from PTS. His friend recommended he get a dog to help, but he thought that was ridiculous. But they took him to the shelter and he met Cheyenne, a pit bull mix. They became best friends and Dave says Cheyenne literally saved his life. From there, he started the organization and it matches rescue animals with wounded warriors. I have seen first-hand what an animal companion can do to heal people and to get them back out into the world. Even something as simple as having to go for a walk or to the park can help people in so many ways. Dogs are so good for protection, laughter, love, and joy. There's also the sad fact they don't live as long as we do. When I lost Henry at age 14 to Cushing's disease, I didn't think I could get another dog. But Greta told me it would fill the hole in my heart, and she was right. That's how goofy Jasper came into our lives. And it did return joy to my life.

I appreciate you joining Rally Point and offering to answer questions. You will receive many questions, both past and current.
When it comes to veterans, you could not find a better source than Rally Point. The depth of knowledge and experience is profound.
I look forward to having a dialogue.
