1. Why can't the people who are medically retired transfer their education benefits to their kids? Many of the people who are Purple Heart recipients can't transfer their benefits and do not have the attainability to transfer it. Most states give a 4 year degree for free on instate colleges

Again, great question! We're leading the way in improving the GI Bill for purple heart recipients, survivors, and more. Check out http://www.forevergibill.org to learn more. I think you'll like what we're trying to do for veterans today and in the future.

Jared, I am Randy Purham, I serve as the Senior Ambassador for the Student Veterans of America chapter at American Military University / American Public University System. Thanks for your time on behalf of the Student Vets. My question: With the growing trend of Veterans pursuing online education, what advice would you give to students transitioning from the virtual classroom to the workforce - in terms of staying relevent and marketable in comparison to their traditonal brick & mortar counterpart Students?

Hey, Randy - it's awesome to hear from you, I know we've met a couple of times in-person, too. You're question is a good one and well suited for the modern era, where no longer does geographic displacement prevent us from connecting. A few thoughts come to mind:
First - Use platforms like RallyPoint and LinkedIn to stay connected to fellow servicemembers, but also to seek out veterans who have similar degrees to yours or work at the companies that you want to work at following graduation.
Second - Seek articles, blogs and posts from subject matter experts in your field and connect with them via various social media platforms.
Third - Find ways to 'get social' off-line if you will. Some of my favorite ways are w/ a Team RWB Chapter, local VFW or American Legion Post or your nearby Chamber of Commerce. You never know where your next connection will take you.

Thanks for the advice Jared, I appreciate that. Take care and look forward to seeing again soon.

The GI bill works great if you go to a brick-and-mortar school, when will the GI-Bill give the same monetary funds for on-line school?
You get housing assistance going to a brick-and-mortar school, but not on-line.

Hey Charles, appreciate the question. You do receive a housing allowance if you attend an online school at a reduced rate. You can also combine your course load with a couple classes at a brick-and-mortar school to receive even more. Check out this FAQ from VA for more. https://gibill.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1480/kw/online/session/L3RpbWUvMTQ5OTcxNzgzOS9zaWQvYXROUXhnbm4%3D

I would like to know when this became effective. When I got out in 2010 I applied for housing allowance I was denide and I was a full time on-line student without a job for 18 months.

With the ability to transfer the Post 9/11 GI Bill, has there been a focus on finding scholarships with availability open to Veterans? If so, does your organization carry a listing of recommended scholarships to apply for?
PO2 Jared Lyon

Hey Trevor - The GI Bill doesn't cover everything, which is why we offer scholarships every semester to student veterans through some great partners like Raytheon, Google, and Disney. You can learn more at http://www.studentveterans.org/programs/scholarships/past-scholarships We don't maintain a list of recommended scholarship but you can search for them via our partners at College Factual (http://www.collegefactual.com).

As a recruiter, I really want to help our veterans out. I am not a veteran, but I do understand that veterans have unique needs. Would SVA chapters welcome a civilian promoting opportunities in the civilian world?

Hi Joanne - Every SVA Chapter is unique, but many welcome the opportunity to engage with resources that prepare student veterans for life beyond the classroom following graduation. Feel free to give our team at the SVA National HQ a call any time to connect w/ a specific Chapter: [login to see] or check out our Chapter Map - with over 1,400 Chapters nationwide, there's bound to be a few near you: http://studentveterans.org/chapter/directory

Veterans in some of the various career fields such as Combat engineer and EOD can apply what they learned in them to a Civil Engineering degree and/or a Law Enforcemrnt degree.. Other fields can allow those who learned in them to translate their general leadership capability.. (of course first is being able to lighten up on the Military synonyms in some of them) ... At first when I went into
The Culinary field It was not too hard.. we actually had a good mix of Veterans in our groups.. it was my Veteran Comrades and the Baker Chef instructor and the Stores/
Stock instructor that interceded.. I got to where I half translated the synonyms and it seemed to work for those that had never yet served our country( between myself and my Veteran Comrades we worked to talk to our "civilian" classmates to check into being a citizen/service person. Out of 15 to 20 we got 8 that checked into being a Citizen/ Service person and 5 that actually went forward and joined... I don't recall which ones they joined or how long they stayed but I thought that was pretty good.. this was back in '79 and another period when I went back to expand into another part of hospitality management field (there some of us made our totally civilian counterparts to check into the services career field of club management and baseHousing/transient housing. Of course it seems the Military clubs have or are going the way of the prehistoric creatures due to de-emphasis of the libations../ and alcohol awareness becoming the in thing .

There are just not that many slots to translate Military trades into civilian trades..

Good point, Boyd - translating military trades into civilian trades can be a challenge, but thanks to the GI Bill veterans in the Post 9/11 era have many options for education and training.

hy is there a timeline in place that says when you can and can't transfer of your G.I. Bill to your wife or kids? I earned it, I should be able to give it to my wife or children whenever I decide. The only reason regulations like this would be put in place is to limit the G.I. Bill's use. Unless someone can tell me what the difference is between me transferring it two years before I ETS or two years after I ETS.

Charles, once you meet the eligibility requirements of having served at least six years, and made the necessary future commitment for additional service, you have that time up until your separation of service to make the decision. VA provides additional details on this process of their site, http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/post911_transfer.asp. Let us know if we can help in any way as you look to make these decisions. Best, Jared

Hi Jared Lyon, thanks for coming to RP and letting us old guys know what's happening in today's educational benefits. How are today's Veterans doing in our State and Private University's and Colleges in other words are they getting the support they need by their administration and their peers? Also if they've using there GI Bill and or VocRehab, how are the different States and Counties helping the? Here in California we have a State educational benefits for any Veteran who had a father or mother served in the Armed Forces and have a 0% service-connected disability by the VA and they will wave the tuition fees. This is for all UC, State, and Community Colleges. Please pass this to your Veterans who might want to come to California. Thank you for your services to our Country and our Navy sister.

James, thanks for the questions. Students veterans are doing really well in school and that shouldn't be a surprise right? We're more likely to graduate, to earn academically-rigorous degrees, and have a higher GPA. Check out our peer-reviewed research at http://nvest.studentveterans.org/ to learn more. Yes, states are providing tremendous support to student veterans including opening up opportunities alongside VA to be an out-of-state student and attend school at the instate tuition and fee rate. Semper Fi!

Jared, if it is not too late to ask any questions, how do I find out if I still have any education benefits left, or the time to use them, and do any of these benefits include the services to find where/how I should invest my time and passion?
