I would also recommend to start reading about the industry your desire to work in. Turns out that Americans have shied away from reading, and that there is a serious dearth in new innovative thought. Think about how you would answer the following question during an interview: "What was the last book, you read, and give me a brief synopsis of the contents?"

"Meetup Groups" are becoming more and more popular; this is a great way to network. Do your recon..check them out and you just might make that perfect connection.

Anyone transitioning to civilian life should begin the process early. Start finding out everything you can about your chosen career field (if different from your MOS) or finding out what you can expect as far as positions, pay, benefits and the like in your MOS's civilian equivalent. Start networking with people out there who can help grease the skids when you start applying for jobs. Get to know headhunters in your field, too. They know who is hiring. Be wary of search firms that want you to pay. That can be an expensive proposition.

LikedIn, Facebook, RallyPoint...all these are great resources. Just don't send your resume to a new connection and expect him or her to set it on the hiring manager's desk. I've had that happen to me a couple of times. Trust me, relationship-building goes a LONG way to getting that kind of help!
