I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is really freaking cold.
If your question implies something is changing, it is because the international base at McMurdo has become a Mecca of sorts for climate scientists. They had quite a building boom down there.

It's a different place now obviously since I was there '76-78 timeframe. No military there anymore except for ANG C-130 lifts in and out. McMurdo likely has a couple/few liaison types for the air services and Coast Guard work. Everything is contracted out.

Yeh, they and we keep a toe in the water to be in line to take a slice of the pie if the treaty stuff goes into the dumpster. When it makes economic sense to exploit the hell out of it, then you'll see the big push.
