U.S. Overseas Territories by Bill Bennett and John Cribb

On July 25, 1952, Puerto Rico became a self-governing commonwealth with a constitution written by Puerto Ricans and modeled after the U.S. Constitution. The island had been a U.S. possession since 1898, when Spain surrendered it at the end of the Spanish-American War.

Puerto Rico is the largest of a handful of island territories under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Thank you for America on Parade. My thinking is that Puerto Rico should be allowed to become its own nation, divest away from this nation. We can still have close ties, economic and military, but be free and self determining. Same for the other areas populated and held as territories.
