I didn't know 1st Lady Ladybird Johnson was instrumental in getting rid of the first prototype.
Interesting how the air force has money to keep the B52 going until 2060 but Jealous air force brass wants to put all the A-10 Warthogs in the boneyard, even though the Thunderbolt saved more lives than any plane made today. The F35 And the F15 strike Eagle Wcho X-ray will not be able to do the same job. Men and women will die.

Easy, they have the desire to keep a 62 year old BUFF flying for 35 more.years, but they don't have a desire to keep the A-10 flying Ten more years. Both are easily shot down By missiles but the BUFF has more friends in the USAF.

LTC (Join to see) Easy answer, CAS is a mission the AF doesn't want/never wanted. Problem is neither did the Army. When the Soviet Union fell the A-10 became an aircraft with no mission. Army wanted no fixed wing combat aircraft around the same period but some forward thinker saw the potential of the A-10 in the CAS mission, so it fell to an AF aircraft without a mission.
