Easy, they have the desire to keep a 62 year old BUFF flying for 35 more.years, but they don't have a desire to keep the A-10 flying Ten more years. Both are easily shot down By missiles but the BUFF has more friends in the USAF.

LTC (Join to see) Easy answer, CAS is a mission the AF doesn't want/never wanted. Problem is neither did the Army. When the Soviet Union fell the A-10 became an aircraft with no mission. Army wanted no fixed wing combat aircraft around the same period but some forward thinker saw the potential of the A-10 in the CAS mission, so it fell to an AF aircraft without a mission.
