I highly encourage all interested to walk the battlefield -- reading the history shows tough decisions had to be made -- the ground shows it was infinitely more tough than the readings imply

Agreed. Took my students there in Army ROTC, twice. Among other exercises, had them walk the entire length of Pickett's charge from the woodline all the way to the small stone wall. Also went up on Little Round Top and re-enacted LTC Chamberlain's orders to defend it and "swing like a gate"...
