“Headquarters” refers to the BN/BDE/DIV Command Team and the Staff. “Headquarters Company” is all-encompassing of the command team, staff, and all the Soldiers assigned to the company. Does that make sense? I know that sounds strange.

Greta explanation SFC (Join to see). I was assigned to three HHC's during my career and I never gave it a thought until I saw this question.

1LT (Join to see), MAJ (Join to see) hit it on the head. If you get a chance, have the HHC Commander go over the manning roster with you so you can see the breakdown. The Headquarters (including S-designated staff sections) will be listed separately from the Headquarters Company. Traditionally, the HHC Commander is seen as the logistics and sustainment OIC for the Battalion (working closely with relevant staff leads), but doctrine is evolving and in some maneuver elements, the HHC Commander is being used as an additional maneuver commander.

The tricky part is during mission planning: when are the Soldiers reporting to the HHC Commander and when are they "working" for their staff OIC/XO?

Headquarters for the BN staff and all the S shops. Headquarters Company for all the stuff that supports that BN element at the company level.
