War veterans: Are you struggling like I am? Not fitting in, occasionally suicidal, numb even to close loved ones. HELP!

I'm struggling bad with PTSD and opiate on/off addiction for severe back pain. Please help with whatever you got, cause I got nothing :(. I've been out of the Army now for 7 years, and I still can't find my way in the world. After being a combat medic, I actually became a Registered Nurse (RN), but after a couple years of that job, I was so "batshit" crazy and having flashbacks and nightmares, I had to walk away from it. Now I'm 100% service connected, but I want to finish school. I made it through Organic Chemistry for my Chemistry degree, but got worse now. I don't know how to fight this anymore, it's too much, too many bad memories, too many bags and lockers filled in my head :( Doc Shon Hill

Just an update for you all, I appreciate you all so much for caring and I am safe, not in line to be another statistic today :) I'm heading to Walla Walla WA VA tomorrow morning, so wish me luck on PTSD Treatment or whatever gets lined up. You are great people, my great ppl and support. Come hell or high water, Im going to RP Rally so I can't wait to meet some/bunch of you in person. I'll keep up with you all here tomorrow, I just have spotty internet or complete lack sometimes. TY VERY MUCH MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS :)

Great to hear, please seek out professional help for this always. This is not a sign of weakness but one of strength and courage. Too bad the Army and other services ignored this for so long and placed a career ending stigma to it. You CANNOT fix this by just ignoring it or taking just taking all of us "jailhouse lawyers" advice online. It may be a long road to recovery, with more bumps up ahead, but with proper help and support it will be done. Medications, counseling, groups, and friends with similar issues are the key. Finding the right line of work to not trigger the memories and the like also, finding someone to teach you how to deal with them when they do occur. I wish you the best, keep us up to date.

The VA is a great way to get with other combat veterans, both individual and in vet to vet groups. It has helped me greatly. Be careful of the opiates they prescribe, I was on them way longer than anyone should be, 12 years to be exact. Before you know it you will become addicted on them. Thank goodness, although in pain on a Dailey basis I no longer depend on prescription quick fixes. Hang in there Brother

I am an Army Chaplain, and having thirty years in I will share with you I had some childhood trauma come up when I was deployed. I had to go to a year of group therapy.
You are not alone, I send you a message and send me your phone number and I am here or you. I will share with you, you have to go to the VA, and get counseling.
Find others at the VFW that understand and remember you are not alone. I would not be a Chaplain if it wasn't the valley I had to walk through!

Not sure how much this will help or how long before they finally come on line, http://www.petizz.com/the-cornerstone-project.html is a sustainable community being built in Cave Junction, OR. They have about an 80 participant plan for a pilot program and are working with the VA for assisting Veterans with retraining in a communal environment that is not significantly different than what you would find deployed.
Online education and training, 400 sq ft "RV" for living quarters, central facilities. Integrated in a small community. It is a pilot program, but it's close to home for you, might be worth looking in to.

They do have a few hiccups with the program, the for profit school that they managed to bring in for the education part has an emphasis on law enforcement and security. I'm also not sure how dependent the program will be on "rents" from the participants and "financial aid" for retrainees and whether there is part time work available as part of the community or in the nearby town... After all, even the good guys these days aren't able to do everything for free...
