I disagree. The vast majority of Americans have never been in the military. The closest experience most have had is TV or the movies. We have generations who have been taught that respecting and serving your country is wrong. They are self absorbed, doing only for themselves.
We just came out of an administration that encouraged protesting anything and everything, that hate speech and violence was acceptable as long as it was directed at things progressives were against.
The left seems convinced that the USA is something to be loathed and pride in country is a sin.
In Europe, military parades are common in many countries and accepted. The United States used to have military parades.
Maybe it is time to bring the parades back. To show more Americans that there are people who take pride in their country. Who are willing to serve their country.

Gotta make a correction here, I didn't mean to say all who were in the Guard were reprehensible, nor was Bush, just for being in the Guard.

SN James MacKay - Yeah, that's what I thought. Everyone who served in the National Guard served honorably! (Except for GWB, his service was crap.) I bet you still believe the Dan Rather letter was real.

MSG (Join to see) - You said, "Many did not get deferments and avoided the draft such as Schumer, Bob Menendez, Dick Durbin, and Muhammed Ali"

It took a few minutes, but here's what I found...

Chuck Schumer, DOB November 23, 1950; 1971 Lottery Number 193; Highest number called: 125. He wasn't drafted because his number was too high, not because he avoided the draft.

Bob Menendez, DB Jan 1, 1954; 1972 Lottery No. 207; Highest number called; 95; (Last Draft Call Dec. 1972). He wasn't drafted because the draft ended before he was eligible. However, when he turned 18 (1972) his draft number would have been 207, too high to be called.

Dick Durbin, DB Nov. 21, 1944; BS Georgetown, 1966; JD Georgetown, 1969; Had a "family deferment", according to The Oklahoman, published: August 26, 1988. I wasn't able to find a reliable definition for "family deferment", so that's not an answer. Still uncertain...

Muhammed Ali, refused to serve. "Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?"

"No, I am not going ten thousand miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation..."

He stood by his convictions, and took the consequences. He didn't dodge anything.

You said, "Trump did get a deferment, like thousands of others including Jimi Hendrix."

I'm not so much concerned about Jimi Hendrix. (He's dead, ya' know?) I know full well about Donald Trump's deferments. Like so many of our contemporaries, he had four years of 2S, Student deferments. Like many fewer of our contemporaries, he had a fifth and subsequent years of 4F/1Y Deferment for "bone spurs on his heel".

Let's be honest, we all know that a lot of those who had that kind of deferment were faking it. I have had bone sours on my heel. They ARE incredibly painful, making walking nearly impossible. Mine were diagnosed only by my symptoms, and were temporary. I can assure you, though, I can point right to the point of pain on the foot that had the pain. And I can tell you the name of the doctor who tried to help me through the attack.

Mr. Trump, on the other hand, doesn't remember which foot he had the problem with. He can't remember the name of the doctor who treated him. Can't remember the name of the doctor who wrote the note to his Draft Board that got him his last deferment (presumably the same doctor). The doctor's name is not recorded in the Record of his local Draft Board, nor is the note filed anywhere. Contrary to Selective Service Regulations, he was not examined by one of their physicians.

In short, like probably thousands of young men of the time, he successfully evaded being drafted. He let thousands of other less fortunate, less well connected, less wealthy young men fight and die for our Country. However, he is the only one, the ONLY ONE, to stand on a platform with a Purple Heart in his hand and declare, "I always wanted one of these." He's the only one to claim to love the Military that he ran away from.

Chuck Schumer, Bob Menendez, Dick Durbin, and Muhammed Ali didn't do that. Only Donald Trump.

Sgt Bob Leonard -
You seemed to get some of your facts wrong. I attached the link below for the Vietnam draft and a separate link for the numbers called in 1970.
People born in 1950 were in the first draft which was held in 1970. There were 195 numbers. Chuck Schumer's was 182.

Muhammed Ali, it didn't matter that he stood by his convictions. Someone else took his place. He was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in prison

If you want to bring up draft dodgers, that includes famous people living and dead. That includes prominent Democrats. Outrage should be non partisan, otherwise it appears manufactured. In short, if you are going to blame Trump, you need to blame Schumer, Durbin, and other Dems as well.

Regarding people who did not volunteer for Vietnam or get drafted? I don't really care. No one wanted to go. It was a country that had not attacked us and most Americans did not know why we were there. My cousin was killed, my brother was there for the TET offensive, many of my friends and neighbors had either been there or never returned. The people in the US treated returning veterans like criminals.

If you want to have anger for someone, show it to the cowards who didn't enlist after 9-11 when our country was attacked. Show it for those who were on active, NG, and reserve who received orders for combat and faked an injury or fled. Show it to the wannabe's who wear parts of uniforms and pretend to be veterans like the 30 year old who says they fought in Vietnam or the clown that wears a uniform with obvious issues such as rank or awards that are indicative of stolen valor.

What'll it be next. The CIC leading the parade in a polished steel helmet, jodhpurs and Jack Boots?

SSgt Christopher Brose - I forgot to add a riding crop, to his costume. All we'd need then is him posing in the turret of a tank, and the image would be complete.

To paraphrase the comedian Will Rogers. It makes more sense for the veterans and soldiers to be in the stands and the civilians to parade in the street.
