Applying for federal jobs requires many things... what job/s have YOU found to be the most difficult to gather resources and/or prepare for their application.
2nd Part of Question
Recently I applied for a Federal Railroad Administration Leadership Job, It was a Long and Arduous process. I made it to the third and final set of personal interviews. Then they told me they would be in touch soon for the final selection. Then Nothing.... I called back after a Month of nothing and was told they did not hire the position. I'm a 60% disabled Veteran and took advantage of the Over 30% application process. How do you know for sure what they tell you is correct? Supposedly there are laws that guarantee disabled veterans preference at the above 30% level. ALSO I am not grumbling about not getting this job... I think it is actually a blessing in disguise but just stimulating this older thread with updated info.

Again, on a serious note. When I was Job hunting, it seemed like every posting on USAJobs was a dead end. USAJobs is like the worst black hole fore resumes anywhere. I applied for positions at NASA, Naval Research center, Air Force Research Laboratory, anything that had some sort of design engineer or systems engineer position. I never got a single response back. Not one. Plenty of responses from private sector companies (Like GE, who I now work for), but no one on USA Jobs ever seemed to want to talk to me. The frustrating thing is going to job fairs and stuff, the recruiters always seemed genuinely interested. So I don't know what the deal is.

This was my experience too. I went to special seminars on how to use key words and had my USAJOBS resume reviewed by labor department professionals; still nothing. The one job, out of at least 100 I applied for, that I got an interview, I didn't get the job (and due to a system glitch, I got the "sorry, we don't want you" message every Tuesday for a few months). 6 months later, I was brought on to that same team as a contractor and the person they hired for the DA CIV job I was interviewed for is a really great person and I like her, but has less than 1/4 of my qualifications (but her husband works with the manager's husband and was already a DA CIV - things that make you go hmmm). Getting in as a complete outsider seems like Mission Impossible. <div><br></div><div>To the guy that said he could get a job in DC, don't fool yourself. There are a lot more jobs listed in DC, but there are also a TON of government insiders lined up for each and every one. The best approach I have seen - and I am not an expert - is to go with a contracting company where it is a lot easier to get a foot in the door, and then try to transition to a CIV position. Caution: I am deep into my second year and no luck yet. Things are extremely tight right now all the way around.</div>

2LT R. A. - Agreed! You can pull the Org Chart from any of the directorates where I work and just look at all the same (but rare) last names that appear over and over.

It would seem that any one can attain that job, the only qualification required is $$$ to buy votes.

I was going to say that, but then I see who has the current job and realize that there are many more qualified applicants who were passed over too. At least one of the major requirements may have been skipped in the case of the current occupant, so go figure.

I agree with below. Because of budget cuts and the economy it is almost impossible to get a job. For me I can get one in DC/Virginia, but not one here in San Antonio, Texas. The main problem for me I felt was independent documentation of experience, but after getting some civilian certifications to backup resume experience, I am convinced the services are simply hiring from within in the local area. In fact I am still looking here.
After getting more IT certifications, I plan on going into scripting/web related classes to get my bachelors as one last ditch effort to stay IT (either Federal or Civy). If still looking then I will start looking elsewhere in a unrelated profession.

I am actually planning on relocating to SA this coming summer/fall for work and family, so are you saying there are no GS or contract jobs to be had in the area?

I have an Associates, with various certs including CompTIA Security+ and CISSP. And no one seems to be interested here, more jobs available in Dallas and Houston right now. If things take a turn in the economy and the government has an actual budget, it might change. I really like the area, which is why I am considering leaving IT forever. It is a shame since I loved what I did, but I am thankful I am getting my retirement and get to be with family.
