About

Nuru International was founded in 2008 by Jake Harriman, who attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served over 7 years in the Marine Corps as a Platoon Commander in both the Infantry and a Special Operations unit called Force Recon. His personal experiences fighting the war on terror around the world convinced him that extreme poverty is a contributing factor to the causes of 21st century terrorism and insurgency, and that a reduction in extreme poverty will impede their proliferation. To fight terrorism and insurgency from another angle, Jake left his career in the Marine Corps and enrolled at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business (GSB) to build an organization that could ultimately rid the world of extreme poverty in our lifetime.

Nuru International eradicates extreme poverty in fragile rural areas to build communities resilient to violent extremism. It does so by building local nonprofit organizations that equip local leaders and farmers with the skills, knowledge and resources to empower their communities and lift them out of poverty permanently.

How the organization supports veterans

An important part of Nuru's recruiting strategy includes hiring veterans to serve on our international project teams. Veterans have excellent transferable skills as it relates to international development, i.e. driving strategy, managing a team, navigating fluid/chaotic environments, and much more. In turn, we provide veterans with a robust onboarding program and acclimate them quickly into Nuru's culture and work norms. Currently, Nuru's expatriate team is comprised of 40% veterans.
