I know asking me a question is never a Soldier's first choice. They have tried other routes first. Often, the issue is thorny and very important to the Soldier.
I relish these talks, even the "long" ones. It is my chance to really affect a Soldier beyond being the example.
I have always maintained that I am open and available to talk to any Soldier in my formation, all the way to the bottom. I will not supplant their Chain-of-Command, but I think a REAL open door is the right way to lead.

1SGs - yes. CSM - no It's as important for the CSM to have an open door policy and talk straight to his subordinates as it is for the 1SG to do so.

only once in My service did I ever have a 1st Sergeant I had no use for, most of them were outstanding individuals and very approachable. As an E8, way back myself and another fellow E3 had approached and talked to the 1st Sergeant and he started handling that problem while We were still there. Not only was there no delay but an NCO that was the subject of our visit was within 2 days relieved of His current duty and re-assigned. Almost all the 1st Sergeant We knew were there to help us. Another 1st sergeant, We had a MSgt that was screwing with us in the barracks, the 1st Sergeant came in and told Him in No uncertain terms that barracks was His area and told the MSgt to get out of the building and never to set foot in it again. He told us if He ever does return call him right away ! I was mindful of that and other assistance from 1st Sergeant and applied much of that My self when I became a 1st sergeant Myself. I enjoyed that job and the human approach to the men and women assigned to the unit.

My last Firts Sergeant was a real piece of work. I do not think he was ever an airman. He had absolutely no ability to relate to the airmen. He was useless because none of them liked or trusted him. The only thing he was good for was discipline.
