Author and writing

“Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.”
― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

Best parts of holding this position

The best part about being an author is actually two-fold. It is being able to meet so many new and interesting people - not just actual people - but characters in the books I write as well. Everyone is an individual and looks at life differently. It is educational and fun for me to see how different people see the world and how the environment from which people come affects the way they act. - Kevin L. Nielsen

Worst part of being an Author

TIME!
Love to write, must have a set regiment. My mornings consumed with writing, and the following day with editing. Evening reading, you just cannot write unless you learn to read, read and read. I have found we all have the same amount of time each day. It is how we use it. Do not waste the opportunity to write a story down. Take notes if something pops into your head. I had a great First Sargent in my unit that had us put 3x5 cards and a pen in our pocket to take notes each day. I have followed this advice for over 50 years now and it has saved me many long hours trying to remember.

Advice on how to prepare for this position

Free write your story. Start the first draft. To quote Stephen King:
When revising, writers often have a difficult time letting go of words they spent so much time writing. But, as King advises, "Kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler's heart, kill your darlings."
