A Private is the lowest rank in the United States Army. They have just begun Basic Combat Training, known colloquially as Basic, and have no responsibility other than to train and learn how to follow orders and execute their assigned soldier duties.

Privates holding the rank of E-1 have no insignia according their rank. They receive this rank upon enlistment in the Army and report to basic training.
