One of the things that really pisses me off about the push to remove Robert E. Lee statues is that the loony left treats him like he was responsible for slavery and for the Confederacy breaking away and for the Civil War. He was a General! That's as stupid as saying 6 million Jews were killed because of Erwin Rommel or Heinz Guderian.

PFC Lisa McDonald - Lisa thank you very much, I will say not everyone falls into the same category as I do. There are still many jackasses who think stupid and nonsensical thoughts. I hope I did not come across as a complete jackass myself but I am very much an American. Oh, I do have a couple other flags, I have a special forces crest flag under my American in my yard. I have an Afghanistan flag on my office wall signed by lots of SF guys a gift after my wreck. I also have a couple guidons on the wall from previous jobs. So I guess all that to say, thank you again for your understanding and I hope I was not to big of a jackass.

Thank you for your service and for calling me to the carpet.
My comment was to broad.
I spent all my service in Berlin.. Lots of SF and former SF were there leading the way.
You might have heard of Det A which was imbedded in our unit. If you haven't heard of them check them out and their guidon.

That's like saying I was just doing my duty as a German soldier ignorance of the law is not an excuse

PFC Steven Clark - "Just doing my duty as a German soldier" is a perfectly good explanation for everyone who was simply doing their duty as German soldiers. Manning an anti-aircraft battery can't really be considered anything else, can it? Trying to pin the Holocaust on German soldiers is insane. The Holocaust is the fault of those who planned and perpetrated it, not on soldiers who were fighting a war on behalf of their country.
If you ARE trying to pin the Holocaust on all German war-fighters, then using your logic, everyone in Black Lives Matter are cop-hating bigots because a bunch of them were caught on video chanting for dead cops.

History is history, warts and all. Those that want to destroy and re-write it will be doomed to relive it...

Certain members of the southern elite have been busy rewriting history to favor them.
Its the awakening to it that has led to where we are today.

We have fewer statues to Benedict Arnold or Hitler but History does remember them. Why praise treason?

SSgt Christopher Brose - Her country was wrong. Her service was to a group that committed genocide.
Bottom line, like I said, is - did she know what she was defending? Did she know about the concentration camps? Did she know about the plan to exterminate Jews? If the answer is "yes," then, all of her contributions to the Reich aside, she was wrong and shouldn't be proud of what she did.
If the answer is no, then she was an unwilling pawn that supported a cause that was immoral.
Do you support the actions of US Soldiers in Mai Lei during Vietnam? They killed a bunch of people who COULD have been VC. Do you support the Soldier who tortured prisoners in Abu Gharib? No. We don't support Soldiers who commit atrocities and we don't honor those who support those atrocities.
German genocide in WWII is the atrocity. We don't support those who supported Germany in WWII just because they were doing it "for their country." If your country is wrong, screw your country. If MY country is wrong, screw MY country. If the United States embarks on a plan to exterminate Muslims, then the United States will be wrong and anyone who supports it or fights for it in doing so will be wrong.
Nationalism before all else is wrong and simpleminded. Even the Germans get that - they honor their dead, but they don't celebrate their victories that prolonged their atrocities. They don't glorify their leaders that cause so much pain for immoral reasons. They took great pains to remove any symbols that promoted or remembered Nazism fondly. They recognized their mistakes and did what was necessary to rectify it.
Women serving in combat arms has nothing to do with it.

MAJ Bryan Zeski - Have you read much about WWII, Germany, or the Nazis? Nobody knew what was going on in the camps besides the Nazis -- and when I say "Nazis", I mean actual Nazi party members, not German soldiers or German citizens. Not everyone in Germany was a Nazi, far from it. The only people who had any suspicions about activities in the camps were people who lived near the camps, and they tried not to think about it. People who were fighting the war were just fighting the war. SSG Diane R.'s grandmother was just trying to defend her homeland by trying to kill bomber crews, she wasn't defending the Holocaust. The fact that you say "German genocide" tells me you don't really have a clue how to distinguish who was really at fault for the genocide.

SSgt Christopher Brose - So, before I go in depth into what the Germans knew or didn't know, can we agree that, at BEST, Oma was an unwitting participant in supporting a genocidal regime?

LT Shannon R - I never said they should be shunned or disowned - but neither should they be honored and respected for their service to the wrong side of the fight. There is a difference.
Do you agree with the statement, "my country, right or wrong, my country?"
We can love our family without loving or defending their actions which are wrong.
