WITH the Social Security System (SSS) pension uproar still spreading, another problem more serious and identical is brewing, and it can turn into a nasty one if the government fails to listen to their appeal.
I am referring to thousands of the nation’s veterans—former soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and policemen—who have retired after defending our freedom and liberty, fighting terrorism and criminality and saving countless lives from the deadly effects of natural and man-made disasters.
“We did these willingly, even as we faced the risks of uncertain death or injury inherent in our duties, throughout the land. We were on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” the veterans said.
Last Sunday they sent an urgent appeal for justice and compassion to President Aquino and members of Congress (House and Senate), through their 25 organizations, including the Association of Generals and Flag Officers, against the harmful effects of House Bill (HB) 6268 and Senate Bill (SB) 3031 if these proposed measures are signed into law.
These measures are intended to suspend or remove the automatic adjustment, or indexation, of their pension rates with the base pay of those in the active service, which has been granted by Presidential Decree 1638 and Republic Act 8551.

The government should realize that messing with someone's money is not a great idea....and they should also be reminded that Vets are/were part of the well trained military machine...many of whom would be willing to raise arms in defense of their country.... and probably also their meager retirement pay.

This is another reason why Congressman and Senators need to have term limits and no guaranteed retirement! They get too comfortable and feel invincible because nothing they do will affect them personally.

This article is about the Philippines, right? It has nothing to do with US Veterans. But I bet somehow President Obama gets blamed pretty soon. ;)
