The lawmakers are trying to abolish it because they don't want their daughters to get caught up in this.

Capt Richard I P. - I agree, the voluntary service has been working very well.

We need to keep the system in place. I have spent enough time around today's youth to have zero confidence that they will "answer the call."

Answer which call? I'm curious about the last time there was a war worth drafting Americans into.

"The call," was a quote from the original post by SrA Olsen. And Sir, I don't remember my last car accident, but I wear my seatbelt. I've never been in a house fire, but I own two extinguishers. And I haven't gotten laid in a year, but I'll bet I could scrounge up a condom if I needed it. Planning, preparation, preventative maintenance, preemptive action. These things all help solve small problems...before they become major ones.

We need to keep the draft and expand it to include EVERYONE. Review exemptions and eliminate most of them. Our current standing Armed Forces are not large enough to engage any other substantial operation on any more continents.

Should that really be our goal? Isn't the purpose of our military to support and defend the constitution? Does that really require the capability for multiple simultaneous substantial campaigns on other continents?

yes, it does require the US to be able to fight more than one war at a time.
