I was apart of the Stolen Valor discussion a few days ago and came across this. I doesn't matter who the person or persons are if you didn't earn it don't wear it. It frustrates me that the individuals who falsely advertise their decorations or service takes advantages of the kindness and generosity of our supporters. I don't display what I earned because I know, in my heart, I work tirelessly and selflessly in order to protect the rights and freedom of this country. I don't need money, special privileges, or treatment to feel accepted for mine and my brothers/sister military service. I do it because I love it and want to ensure a safe future for all families apart of this great nation. In saying this, I personally thank all members of every branch and their families for your sacrifice. To our supporters, you're welcome we do it because we love to do it. To the fakers, I hope you grow a conscious and realize that what you are doing is wrong and goes against a major belief the military is based on...integrity. Think out that before you put on the extra ribbon, get that free meal, or talk about the "experience" over in the box. Thank you and I welcome any feedback regarding this post.

I still don't see how this is a form of freedom of speech. I have many friends and family that served and some have died in the line of duty so to see some person infringing on their honor it really bothers me. Any job that puts you in harms way should be respected to the extent of legislation. This is great to see.

I agree that posing as a military member falsely should be seen by the law as the same crime as posing as a peace officer.

This problem of 'stolen valor' has been going on since George Washington's time and yet we have been attempting to make it illegal for just as long. That fact alone should demonstrate that there is a general consensus that this particular type of lying is different as those doing it reap intangible benefits while as the same time take away or diminish the same intangible honors bestowed to those that have rightfully earned them. We all get that they are stealing honor. The fact that a group of judges don't see or recognize this 'value' of honor I find even more troubling. Just because you can see it doesn't mean there isn't value attached to it.

Amen! I wholeheartedly agree and sincerely hope that the right to wear the uniform becomes an enforced law! I'm sick of seeing idiots on street corners, desecrating the same uniform that I proudly wore, in fighting next to those who died in it!

Great post. I am one of those who don't advertise my service. I don't go out of my way to get a free meal or ask for a military discount. But if I happen to be in uniform or they ask, I'm not going to deny myself a small perk that I have earned over the last 20 years. But those who falsely present themselves as military members or wear awards and decorations they didn't earn should be held accountable for their own actions.

I ask for military discount all the time. When I know a place offers one I show them my ID. Does this make me an abuser of a system in place to honor all of us who serve or have served? I have criticized a worker and manager for not checking a "veterans" ID or confirm service with official documents before providing a discount. Many civilians don't even understand that military personnel and veterans will usually have these documents readily available.

PO3 Andrew Unite - there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of something you have earned. By all means, take your perks when you can.
