I remember Verdun, but Belleau Woods was the battle I recall the most ..Also I knew guys who served in the Fighting 69th Regiment led by Wild Bill Donovan and were mostly all Irish Catholics from MA and NY.. Also Fr Duffy their Chaplain and The Iron Major Bill Cavanaugh who later coached football at BC in the '20s and were one of the top college teams in the nation ..

Thanks for reminding us about the very bloody battle of Verdun Sgt Kelli Mays.
My grandfather was a Lance Corporal in the British Army who fought in the Gallipoli, Turkey campaign and in the trench warfare in France and Belgium where he was wounded. His brother Ernest was also a soldier. Ernest and his wife were killed during the German bombing of England in 1941

Sgt Kelli Mays The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of WWI and it was between the German and French forces. (probably why it's not generally on our meters). There were huge casualties on both sides. In the end the French forced the Germans out of northeastern France. Guess what my favorite class was. :-)
