Interesting story on how the French Foreign Legion was formed. I always thought they were always the best of the best to make it in.

Thanks for sharing SGT John " Mac " McConnell. I had been curious about the French Foreign Legion ever since I saw the 1939 Gary Cooper movie Beau Geste. I knew the French empire did not extend as far as the British and that they used a different model of governing their colonies. The French Foreign Legion seemed to be the 19th century equivalent of a rapid deployment force to deal with trouble anywhere in the empire.
