PO2 Jeffrey Sheibels My dad was part of the newly created Seabee; his unit participated in 4 South Pacific Campaigns during WWII which were actually not in the Navy but subordinate to them similar to the Marine Corps. Back in the day the regular Navy did not like more resented them. Unlike the Marines and Army Air Corps that loved the air strips, hospitals and beach heads they cleared and built with their heavy equipment and construction expertise

SGM, God bless your Dad, for his service and for laying the foundation for me to become a Seabee for 24 years. The Navy still looked at us like that until the Marines, Army and SOF started asking for Seabees to support them down range. The Navy has now created a higher command to keep control of Seabees and has oversight of them.

CPO (Join to see) - Your welcome and thank you for your service. My dad and his brother became Seabees partly because they were color blind and not eligible for the Navy. Dad was in the 77th CB loved going to his unit reunions including their final one a few years back in Texas placing a unit plaque at Pacific War museum in Fredericksburg. The birthplace of Admiral Nimitz

My Uncle John was in the Coast Guard during WWII and he used to pick on me, because I spent 20 yrs in the Navy and only spent 6 days on a Ship. That's because I was in the Seabees

That's Nothing, I retired from the NAVY without ever being on a Ship. I was in Aviation and spent all my time in PATROL SQUADRONS (Planes were too big to land on Carriers) We DID however deploy for 6-8 months every year. Some places were great, (Spain, Sicily, Puerto Rico, VP-21. Pensacola,FL 2 tours, then to the PACIFIC. There, I attended P-3 Orion SubHunter Flight Engineer School for 7 Months ten caught up with my Squadron, VP-48 based at NAS Moffett Field near San Francisco,CA While assigned there I deployed to S. Viet Nam twice for 6½ months each with time in Thailand thrown in, Japan, Taiwan, and Adak Alaska & Guam for 6 months a piece plus varying 5-10 day TAD's to Cocos Islands, Australia, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, (Cavite & Subic Bay. My last tour was as a Navy Recruiter in NYC Westchester County for 4 years. I also spent 6 months in Iceland, Bleccch!!! Loved almost EVERY MINUTE OF MY TIME IN THE NAVY AND I LEARNED A LOT. I did take a 8 hours dive on the the USS Sea Robin while detached from VP-21 SHORE PATROL NAF
SIGONELLA in Sicily. I would not trade that life for any other. After I retired I got a job with AT&T COMMUNICATIONS for the next 20 years & was "DOWNSIZED" 1 YEAR BEFOE i WAS ELIGBLE TO RETIRE so I used Unemployment to pay for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer for 9 Months then opened my own Consulting Company for Computer Repair and Servicing & as a consulting Tech for HP part time. Yes, I can say I've had a varied, Successful & very HAPPY time in the NAVY... AMH1 USN RET.
