Pueblo, Hainan incident, the capture of our crew and boats in Iran, would tend to indicate that we will do nothing to seriously upset the proverbial apple cart.

" OR I WILL brake your feet and stick them on your head and smash YOUR ... Putin continue talking about Russia's nuclear weapons and hinting to .... bayonets; if you encounter mush, proceed; if you encounter steel, withdraw,” the aide said."

MCPO Roger Collins - Master Chief;

[1] "Pueblo" - There was a difference in what the definition of "territorial waters" was and once the ship was seized there really wasn't anything much that the US government could do about it other than either negotiate the return of the ship and crew or start a war.

[2] "Hainan" - The odds that the PLAN(AF) pilot deliberately crashed into the USN aircraft are incredibly low. Once the mid-air collision had taken place, there really wasn't much that the US government could do about the fact that the USN aircraft had actually landed inside PRC territory.

[3] "Iran" there isn't much doubt that the boats were ACTUALLY inside Iranian territorial waters and that means that the Iranians had every legal right to intercept and detain.

MCPO Roger Collins - Master Chief; Not getting upset over something that isn't upsetting (and which you do yourself) is hardly "doing nothing".

LTC (Join to see) - Major; Maybe I'm just getting old and senile, but I find it difficult to see how using the military force that is conducting an exercise based on attacking your country as a training aid for an exercise based on defending your country from an attack is "provocative" (in anything other than the diplomatic sense [where "provocative" means "something that we can complain about even if there is actually nothing to complain about in the faint hope that the other side is going to be so stupid that they don't realize that there isn't anything to complain about and {as a result of their own stupidity} give us something that we couldn't otherwise get]).

Then they should start, we don't need to get into a war over stupidity.

SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth - Sergeant; Are you seriously proposing taking away the right of testosterone fuelled jet jockeys to play silly-bugger in the skies?

Putin is like Donald Trump, he gets media attention and more people support him when his oil empire is collapsing and so he does these stunts for the evening news!

LTC (Join to see) - Major; In "personality type", I'll agree that Mr. Putin is quite similar to Mr. Trump.

However, Mr. Trump grew up in a school where, if you fail, you declare bankruptcy (which at the top end of the economic spectrum generally means that you get to keep all of your money but don't have to pay your debts) and start all over. Mr. Putin, on the other hand, grew up in a school where, if you fail, you tend to end up dead (if you are playing with the big boys at any rate).

While both Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin have "goals", the odds are that Mr. Putin has a much sounder and comprehensive "plan" to achieve those goals than Mr. Trump does.
