Well, your link is unreachable (at least when I tried it) and your interpretation of the Civil War has been espoused and debunked many times. The Southern states were inspired to secede by the success of the abolitionists in the national elections. The Articles of Secession specifically mention slavery as their casus belli. It's time to move on, isn't it?

Having grown up about 15 minutes from Stone Mountain park, and having been exposed to the various "cultures" that the South had to offer, I am not the least bit surprised by any of the actions described in your link, COL Ted Mc. The "Grand Dragon" of the KKK used to live about two miles from where I lived with my parents.

You are absolutely correct about your four points. Both parties who were involved in this incident had the right to protest, as long as they did so peacefully.

These are the rights that we fought for, they are the building blocks upon which our great country is built, and no one should try to silence another person's ideas or beliefs. You may, or may not, agree with everything that either of these groups have to say, but as a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine, you put your life on the line to protect their right to say it. (A pity sometimes........)

Great article, Sir. Thank you for the discussion !!

When Curly, Moe, and Larry are turning in circles and hitting each other in the head with 2x6's, does anyone care if the hit is on purpose or accident? No! they just don't want to get hit in the head anymore. Current interpretation of symbols may differ from historical context or original meaning. Refusing to accept that current interpretation, is the equivalent of demanding that Moe not feel pain when Curly hits him with the 2x6.

If a symbol offends someone, I am going to weigh whether its use means more to me than the offense I offer someone else. Barring some overriding importance, I am not going to use it intentionally around that person. Nor would I display it publicly in an area where a person who might be offended might happen upon it. Furthermore, I would question my need to even keep it in a "private" display. Having said that, I can only see the display of the "Stars and Bars" making sense in a museum setting discussing the military campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia.

That doesn't mean I'm not in favor of free speech. I choose to self-regulate my speech hoping to accurately convey what I truly mean.

COL Ted Mc - I agree with you 100%, in principle. I also agree 100% that I am bending to the "politically correct". Its just not a battle I choose to fight. I also think the star arrangement looks more like a weber grill than an elephant.

Maj John Bell - Major; If (no reference to yourself here) someone is "stupid and politically correct" does that make them any less stupid?

It's time that you got involved in one of the MAJOR political parties. The odds on "The Tailgate Party" having any electoral success ARE better than the odds on "The Original Reformed Vegetarian Party" having electoral success - but not much.

COL Ted Mc - I consider myself a Tea Party Republican. That means I believe in Constitutionally limited small government, minimal regulation, lower taxation, virtually no social spending, border enforcement, no amnesty for illegal immigrants and immigration policy that brings the best and brightest to America.

Maj John Bell - Major

- Constitutionally limited small government - agreed (the problem is in the definition of "small")

- minimal regulation - agreed (the problem is in the definition of "minimal")

- lower taxation - agreed

- virtually no social spending - sorry, I simply can't go along with the platform of the Social Darwinists "Let the poor starve."

- border enforcement - agreed (although how you are going to do that with "small government, minimal regulation, and lower taxation I'm not sure)

- no amnesty for illegal immigrants - agreed (dealing with those who didn't know that they were "illegal immigrants" when they entered the country is still something that has to be worked out)

and

- immigration policy that brings the best and brightest to America - agreed (although the rest of the world isn't going to take too kindly to America 'raping their future' and what you are going to do about the FAMILIES of "the best and the brightest" is still something that has to be worked out).

I do like the GOALS, now what is the PLAN to achieve them?
