I was researching what may have legendary claims about George Washington when I came across this site which seems very responsible and factual.
Here is an intro and outline of the facts with some of the more pertinent facts in full:

The French & Indian War drove the later Revolutionary War which began a mere dozen year after the first war. The American colonies had to learn means of getting along with each other, had to field mustered armies of volunteer soldiers, and finally the greatest threat against their collective security, the French presence in the Ohio valley, became removed in the great feats of arms the British accomplished. The French & Indian War served as a great dress rehearsal of sorts and demonstrated that the colonial soldiers could fight & win against the disciplined soldiers of Europe. The insurgency tactics of the Indians beguiled the British at first but they did learn. The French & Indian War enabled the later Revolution for without the first the second would not have incubated.

Col. George Washington's French and Indian War experiences are summarized in a paper he wrote - the only autobiographical writing he ever did - that miraculously survived and is now is on display in the museum at the reconstructed Fort Ligonier, in Ligonier PA. It is available in book form. It was at this place, on 12th Oct 1758, that Washington participated in a battle between French and Indians and Forbes' British Army, almost getting himself killed when he inserted himself between two colonial units firing on each other. The French had orchestrated the surprise attack in an attempt to disrupt Brigadier Forbes' inexorable advance toward Fort Duquesne, a mere 40 miles to the west (now the site of Pittsburgh PA). Shortly after the Forbes Campaign ended with Fort Duquesne blown up and the French gone, Washington resigned his Virginia commission due to his inability to get a King's Commission into the regular British Army. He married the widow Martha (who was rich) and became a wealthy planter/politician. One can only imagine what might have happened in 1775 had Washington been able to get his King's Commission into the Army 20 years earlier. Nobody else would have been able to hold the Continental Army together as he did in the face of hardship and defeat, and we would probably now have a country much the same as Canada with Elizabeth II as our Queen.
For those of you who haven't been to Fort Ligonier, I highly recommend it. The original fort was built in a howling wilderness, whereas the reconstructed fort is at the edge of the town, but it doesn't take much to imagine how it was then, especially if there is a reenactment going on. The fort has a great museum and is in very picturesque country just west of Laurel Ridge.
For those of you who haven't been to Fort Ligonier, I highly recommend it. The original fort was built in a howling wilderness, whereas the reconstructed fort is at the edge of the town, but it doesn't take much to imagine how it was then, especially if there is a reenactment going on.
