The issue with a representative government is that it MUST represent EVERYONE. Even the ignorant.

We don't get the government we need. We get the government we deserve.

So who decides where the line is for stupidity?
I don't want to use the term "Ignorant". Ignorant implies there is a capacity for learning. Stupid is pretty much forever.

I don't pay taxes because I don't work so I shouldn't be allowed to vote?

SPC (Join to see) - Considering you are verified as being an Active Service Member here, I find your statement amusing. If you feel you don't work enough, let me know who your 1SG is and I'll drop him a line.

Based on the thread title, I was about to write a response about the dangers of "weeding out the ignorant." (Who decides who is ignorant? The definitions of ignorant would vary wildly depending on who gets to make that determination.)

But after reading the article, I agree wholeheartedly. Knowing basic facts about how our government works is foundational. How can people work to create or change a law if they don't know how laws are made? More times than I want to think about, I have heard people talk about their "Constitutional rights" referring to something not in the Constitution. I even heard a Presidential candidate not know how many states are in the United States.

Thanks for taking the time to read Staff. I had the same reaction upon seeing the title but was very excited upon reading the authors appeal to civic education.
