With the exception of the F-22 & F-35 the aircraft on the list are either old or limited use aircraft. Both of these factors drive up the flying hour costs. Once parts are no longer in the supply chain special contracts must be negotiated to make specific parts again, these contracts don't come cheap, yet become part of flying hour cost calculations. We often use to joke about little old ladies in tennis shoes custom making parts in their garage for a hanger queen aircraft waiting on parts. The F-22 & F-35 are so new that we are still recovering from and factoring in production costs in their flying hours. As someone mentioned, small price to pay for operating the most capable fleet of aircraft in the world.

So,
What we do instead is put out BIGGER contracts for LARGER sums for limited use limited time airframes with more Inventory shortages and lacking supply chains to give more politicians opportunities to beat their chests and proclaim how grand and glorious they are without doing the job of protecting the country that they are paid to do.
If replacement airframes don't SIGNIFICANTLY improve upon their replacements and don't supply a maintenance supply chain good for multiple decades, scrap the whole idea of the program and hold hostage the pay and retirement checks of the members of congress responsible for the resulting debacle.

Pretty much correct. Unfortunately politicians don't let DOD get funding to sustain any weapon system when its being developed, they either cut # of units produced or overall funding. Their shortsightedness costs all taxpayers in the long run.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen DoD could screw up a wet dream when it comes to this stuff. They are paying Microsoft so that they can continue using Windows XP for certain things because they don't want to deal with upgrading to new technology, but they have the F-22 which is the most advanced fighter in the skies. Makes absolutely no sense, and you could pull your hair out trying to make sense out of it.

At March Air force base I saw the crew of Doomsday plane, the E-4 , left a signed picture by the crew in the base pub. Very creepy!
