Fresh grief is an odd and unpredictable thing. My son was hit by a car and killed when he was 12. I always appreciated when people who knew him told me some anecdote or favorite memory they had of him. Anything else was a crapshoot. What I appreciated one hour, might light a carefully concealed rage on the next.

Unfortunately, at some point I stopped concealing the rage. I was particularly cruel to people that said things, (that they probably didn't really mean), that showed a lack of perspective. My particular trigger was when someone said they loved their pet just like it was one of their kids. I felt a great sense of accomplishment if I could shame them to tears. It took me about two years to get out of that shameful stage. I have since made amends to all I could track down.

No real point to this, except the grieving are completely unpredictable. Don't take it personal if you express condolences or grief for someone's loss and the response isn't what you expect.
