The three USCG polar icebreakers are based in Seattle. USCGC Polar Star is the oldest at 40, with the USCGC Polar Sea at 39, and USCGC Healy at 17. The USCG has a long history of keeping their cutters around for a long period of time. Their current "Queen of the Fleet" is 72 years old and their last was 65.

especially if this global warming ends up changing in the next decade. There is a Schism within the scientific community that even though satellite imagery shows the polar ice caps are melting and you can now use the Northwest Passage, we are at the maunder minimum of solar Sunspot an activity which could lead to a mini ice age in the next 10 or 15 years. That's why I'm concerned that the carbon tax is a big joke because we don't have current proof that this is a long-term problem. So politicians and scientist and green party zealots are using this example to charge more money for their pet projects using the carbon tax. We need to build more ice breakers because what if it becomes like it was 40 years ago and we have a lot more ice to deal with due to the maunder minimum and increased global cooling period

Of course they put less than 1% of their GDP into defense. They have no need to do more, since they know we'll never let anything happen to them. That's why I get pissed off when they tout their free education and free medical. They can do those things because they don't have to spend on defense - they're riding our coattails.
