It's hard for Americans to know the truth about Fidel's Cuba. So many prominent Americans visited there and returned with glowing reports of universal literacy, free health care for all, and other bureaucratic propaganda. Much like antiwar activists such as Jane Fonda who extolled the virtues of North Vietnam, they will never fully realize that they were complicit in the torture and murder of countless people. I spent several years researching Cuban history all the way back to pre-Columbian times in an effort to understand the venue of Castro's revolution. I studied the principle players in equal detail: Castro, Che, Batista, and others. I had a novel to write and I wanted to get it right. Yes, Castro became a monster as the dictator of Cuba. However, I am even sadder to report that in many ways we, the United States, were complicit in his crimes. Although it was not a direct result of our government actions (the US govt in many ways was simply inattentive to Cuba and allowed American businessmen and Mafioso to direct US policy there). We are a government of, by, and for the people, and the actions of those people have consequences.

I haven't told you about this story before, LTC Stephen F.. Have you ever heard of Raul Malo and the Mavericks? They're a Grammy award winning group (Raul sometimes solo) and have performed all over the world.
However, the story is really about Raul Malo, Sr., his father. Raul Senior, is a friend of mine, having met him while he still worked as a financial professional/life insurance agent. He legally emigrated from Cuba in the 1957-58 timeframe (pre-Mariel group). I can't remember all the details, but he had a friend in the U.S. embassy who allowed him to store money, clothes and food there until he a large enough stockpile to sustain himself when he entered the embassy seeking political asylum. His wife (met in Miami much later) escaped separately.
All it takes is a brief conversation with either of them to know what a bad actor Fidel was and know that the world is a better place without him. Only those who haven't spoken to anyone who lived through Fidel's regime would honor such a human being.
