My Fleet Week was a wild-ride indeed. I got stuck with coordinating security for our pier for whole week, so I "lost" the first couple of days to duty. That being said, I was out on the pier (dealing with an attempt by civilians to douse one of our ships with pig's blood)...when someone behind me asked me if I wanted to give an interview; it was Sean Hannity. I said I'd have to get permission first, it was obtained, I was wired for a mic...then someone tapped me on the shoulder. Turned out a two-star thought he'd be in a better position to give the interview than an O-3 (go figure). After finally getting relieved, I managed to get one of the two single, female Marine officers on our boat to agree to "go out" for the day. She was an Italian Yankee...I was a Scots-Irish Hillbilly, and we had a great time. Saw the sights, ate some real NYC food, and all was looking alright headed into the evening. She was a lady, I was a gentleman...she headed back to the boat (I swear Marines have a like a "secret decoder ring" that summons them back before things go south)...I headed to Brooklyn. The rest of that night is a mish-mash of surreal memories; I know I ended up in some places I shouldn't have been in, I know that I had to 'talk' my way out of one joint...I did end up in a fight (but got away)...and somehow got back to the boat alive, without having been arrested, or getting into anything I couldn't have washed off with soap. I'd end up going to NYC many, many more times (so much so that I'm even "known" at Galway Bay Pub near Gowanus)...but that was the "exciting" trip. As for the young lady Marine? Well, she ended up going out with someone else (my heart was broke for a few days)...but, as the saying goes, things turned out O.K. in the long run.
