What is Your Concealed Carry Code of Conduct? - USA Carry

WOW.....this article could not have come at a better time. For those of you who may not know me, I am a strict Constitutionalist and strong defender of our "Bill of Rights", particularly our 2nd Amendment which is the "right to bear arms". I have been a lifelong responsibly arm citizen, sportsman, hunter and hold numerous memberships in gun rights organizations such as the NRA, USGOA, USCCA, etc. Over the years I have been a weapons safety and marksmanship instructor on both military and civilian ranges. And yes, I am a concealed carry license holder who is always armed when not on a military post and other statute prohibitive locations for firearms.
But the reason this article has proved timely is I was involved in a 15-6 investigation which has made me personally evaluate my CCDW Code of Conduct. You know you are under the microscope when the first three questions in the interview are:
Did you attend the off-post-holiday party? Yes.
Did you bring a gun to the party? Yes, I am a CCDW permit holder, as is my wife who was in attendance. And given it was an off post even and recent events involving terrorism, it was a prudent to be armed.
Did you threaten anyone at the party? No. And you are now asking me if I committed a firearms felony. What is this all about?
That was the cliff notes version of my initial response. I then in as few words I could explained to the 15-6 officer what it means to be a responsibly armed citizen and CCDW permit holder. To which she asked why was I telling her all that. So I shut up and left. I later received an email stating my written statement was no longer required. So far there has been no follow up or further feedback. No news is good news...right?
Was I and am I still concerned? Yes...because at it's core was the implication I has acted irresponsibly. But keep in mind attendance to the event was voluntary, it was off post, and alcohol was not being served. If alcohol was served I may have not attended. If I did attend my EDC would be locked in the truck. Also, I am a member of the organization who's hall we were using. It was all quite civilized and sedate.
So where is the beef and why is this a timely article? Because we live in a world, and military environment in particular, where anyone can make accusations without any substance. And because of the seriousness of the allegation, instead of facing the person making the charge, an "fact finding investigation" is conducted to avoid the appearance of impropriety or cover-up. I do not know in my instance if an accusation was made here and nor do I want to know.

Thanks for the share, as it was a very good read. Hopefully everyone who carries, or is considering carrying, reads this and thinks long and hard about it. I fully support C, but only if you take the time to train and work with your weapon of choice, but more importantly, you need to be cognizant of your surroundings and always be thinking about the responsibility you have as a practice of CC. I have heard way too many people, actually one is too many, who have said something to the effect of, "I can't wait until the day some asshole tries to mug me" or "I wish someone would try that on me." Those are the kind of people I not want to be anywhere near, nor are they the people who to be carrying, much less even own a weapon.

I agree with you. Having taught weapon safety and marksmanship in both military and civilian contexts, those "hot heads" are the very people I want disarmed because they will be more dangerous to themselves and those around them. In Kentucky, professional CCDW instructors can and should flag these individuals for closer scrutiny. As a general rule most KY Sheriff's departments take these duties very seriously. Most CCDW permit holders know the best "gun fight" is the one they avoided with good situational awareness and evasive tactics and by staying in condition "yellow".

Mine is due for renewal this year and I cannot remember my crimes of the past. Is it hard to get a background check on myself so that I have it in writing instead of failing to remember for the renewal application?

I enjoyed the read. I did not like reading false witness may have been in play with your situation.
For me Sir, I still use my training as an approach to any issues. I try twice to not have a conflict. Then, esculation of force is warrented up and including deadly force. So far, I have had no issues. I hope it stays that way.
