She's top of her class and wants to be a tanker? Well, I guess some people like tracks. I hated being mech personally. Hands down the worst part of being in Korea was trying to maintain tracks that start leaking like a sieve if you look at them funny. Oh well have fun getting your ads chewed when you have a track that for some reason, no matter how much time energy and money you throw at it, remains on the deadline report.

I was an M48A$ mod B/M60/M60A1 tanker for 7 years, never had any problem's with track or leaking oils. PM is what keeps em going. Only went on deadline one time for a blown pack, got it swapped out and headed back to the field. Although I was a crewman, I took great delight in conducting as much 2nd echelon Maint on my tank as possible. All our tank mechanics were long on work and not enough hands back in the late 70's early 80's. Loved every minute of it. Semper Fi.

I went from a light engineer unit at Lewis to a mech unit in at Camp Hovey, Korea. All of our tracks were old. The Bradleys were constantly requiring expensive maintenance. In fact we had to repair one track that spent half of our company's annual budget. Granted this was 6 years ago, but the constant maintenance problems were a big headache. My squad had a pacer item that was damaged beyond repair in a flood 15 years before I got there. I had to explain to the brigade commander twice a month why my equipment was still deadlined like I could do 40 level maintenance on it.

there is work required to be a tanker , how about changing a pack or track or servicing batterys or humping ammo or changing torsion bars or spraying a foot thick of mud out of the suspension with a fire hose ; No its not very demanding !!!!

The key thing to remember is officer. When was the last time you saw an officer do any kind of maintenance on a track? I will say that it sucks to deal with the XO every time the new deadline report comes out and you have a vk that is on it.

I was on the Company Commander's tank as his Gunner so that meant we had a three man crew back on the ramp. Nature of the beast. Most USMC Tank Officers that I have met (I know a bunch) are great guys. Just because they are officers don't lump them all together. That and I do believe it's a different culture for the Marines. We treat each other like family 24/7. Semper Fi.
