I just do not understand how anyone would think it was a good idea to tour North Korea with an American Passport? This kid had a target on his back from Day 1. Why would any parent acquiesce to such a risk?

True statement, I do agree, sadly this is the outcome.

I cannot sympathize with his parents. I cannot empathize with the man. He went to North Korea on his own knowing that the US couldn't protect him in any way, shape, or form and then he and his family are shocked he's arrested, tried, and convicted of some crime? I only have to suspend disbelief while watching movies, not in the real world.

I agree with your sentiment. Nonetheless this was a preventable tragedy. No American should ever believe that they would be safe in a Communist country. To do so is delusional. I listed to the parents today and thought what father would allow his son to go to North Korea? Did he not fully appreciate the inherent risk? Was he just blind to the potential of what could happen?

It was totally preventable. I have to believe that either they are/were incredibly naive or just absolutely ignorant of the NK government's attitude towards Americans. I'm guessing there's a lot less Kumbaya'ing in this household. I wish things were different, but in all ways he and his family chose...poorly.

It is difficult to muster any sympathy for the young man or his parents. nK has been a foolish place for Americans to visit since the armistice was signed 27 July 1953 if not before. I feel about this a bit like I felt about the American 19 year old that got caned for vandalism in Singapore back in 1994. Actions have consequences ... though for some reason here in the United States we tend to gloss over that a lot of the time.
