My brother and I were abused children, and my brother exhibits many of the characteristics listed here while I often wondered why I don't. Still, like the lead character in the play "Arsenic and Old Lace" whose entire family was bat guano crazy, I harbored a fear that I would snap one day. A friend who was both a minister and a psychologist told me that while most abused children carried these scars throughout life, there were some who didn't. He said they were known as the indomitables.

A lot of those symptoms coincide with what is called complex PTSD.
I believe its easier to deal with the trauma when you are younger.
If as you get older it continues to pile on it gets harder and harder to function.

I think it depends on the individual, abuse was a part of life growing up. Damn I was even child labored. I can't say I was ever a victim of sexual molestation though others in my family were. Each generation usually gets less abusive but more neglected So a lot of people fabricate abuse in order to gain the attention they never had. I was raised with tough love, I also raise my kids the same way. Only difference is I can't child labor them our family was before them, but I encourage them to work. I have seen the results of people abused un mercifully by the same people. And they all act out differently. So really it depends on the person and how they handle abuse.
I'm not saying its right by any means, but these studies in my opinion are more individualized.
