I would beg to differ. When you count all the benefits you get in the military (insurance/food/lodging/etc.) I'd say that even the junior enlisted are pretty well taken care of. Plus, everyone who joins the military knows exactly what they will be paid before they sign. So if it turns out to not be enough, that's their own fault. I'm not saying not to raise the pay. I'm just saying that it's not as bad as some would make it out to be.

TSgt Joshua Duplin - Those may be jobs that need to be treated like military doctors/lawyers. I'm not sure how much it costs a civilian to earn all the accreditations needed in that field so in the short term the military may be the better deal but I'm not sure about the long term.

Either would be good. The private sector doesn't get a lot of the perks the military gets either. When you consider housing, insurance, and other things 2.1 is actually better than the private sector.
