When I was in West Berlin to do urban warfare training, we took a day to go through Checkpoint Charlie and visit East Berlin to "exercise our military right to be there." The Germans had term for the East, schwarz und grau which means black and gray. No color In East Berlin, nothing on the shelves, unpatched bullet holes from World War II, and nary a smile on any face i saw. These photographs represent communism perfectly.

I can't recall the boundary limit, but because of my clearance level I was not supposed to be closer to the E-W border than something like 50 clicks.
We did have some fun games with the SMLM guys in their shiny black automobiles. During one field problem the personnel at one installation neglected to put out the specified "Russians Go Home" signs, so the Smell-Ums drove right up into the middle of the shot, got out and happily took pictures before they were ushered out.
I always tested our backwoods tactical wire runs in Russian when they were first deployed.

I just got through reading a book about the MiG 29 pilot who flew his plane to Turkey and defected. Man, he paints a miserable picture about life in the old communist Soviet Union.
