In archives Montgomery paper is story of a woman arrested for yelling "shame!" at mob beating Freedom Riders in 1961.
She was charged with disturbing the peace and inciting the mob that beat Freedom Riders bloody. None of the mob was arrested.
Violent mobs led by the KKK took over Montgomery for 2 days in 1961. Response of Gov. was to deplore violence but blame Freedom Riders.

My take is that the Duke didn't like Pres Trump's 3 day late response so he had to make it up to Duke with the 'both sides at fault' comment.
