Personally, I could care less about a statue of Robert E. Lee or any monument to the Confederacy. The whole controversy reminds me of the part in the bible about "If thine eye offends thee". If you want to pluck your own eye out...go for it. However, I would suggest that you might also want to look at some of the dozens of schools, airports, highways and government buildings named after the Honorable Robert C Byrd.
I also wonder how much the people who are fighting to pull down General Lee's statues actually know about the man, his life, or even his beliefs. This article in the Smithsonian Magazine online gives good overall assessment of the man who is readily acknowledged as one of the best generals America has ever produced.

To be fair, I kind of understand the complaint. It's easy to see how those who have been oppressed in the past (not so distant) are offended to see their neighbors extolling the oppressors. It's just strange that it didn't matter before now. It may be argued that these things went under the radar as Civil Rights activists focused on the bigger issues. Thus, I am content to allow each community to hash it out and decide if they want to remove these reminders or use them as icons of America overcoming its faults. I prefer to stay focused on issues that merit my attention. For example, why were the police ordered to stand down and allow the violence to erupt?

Why were the police ordered to stand down? If one thinks real hard the answer is obvious. As far as historical monuments to Veterans of the United States Military as well as burial sites. As far as I am concerned they is sacred! They are part of the history of the United States period. Those that fought the Civil War made this country what it is today!

When you are en emotion driven mess you can never actually look at facts objectively. They are to busy showing the world they care more than anyone else. They will accept no fact that doesn't support their distorted view of history, because if they did they would have to admit they were wrong and they will never do that.
