The Second Amendment was never written to enable a sport like hunting or target shooting; it was written and understood from a deadly serious point of view about the security and nature of a free state. It was written to debilitate a tyrannical government and keep it in check until it could be overthrown. Nothing that has transpired in the 20th or 21st Centuries so far has refuted the utility or importance of the Second Amendment.

But if I may be so bold as to expound further on your statement, Diane: Nothing throughout the entirety of human history has refuted the importance of the ability to debilitate a tyrannical government.
Many people today like to THINK that the government is benevolent. However, government by definition is most definitely NOT "benevolent" because it's empowered to make laws, force people to follow those laws, and punish people who do not follow their laws. There is nothing kindly about forcing people to follow laws and punishing people who do not.
Yes, we all (well, most of us) recognize the need for government at various levels of society in order to create a framework in which we can all coexist productively and with minimal problems. Government actually exists at the lowest levels, starting with families who have their own governing bodies (the parents) and the members which make up the family unit itself as its constituents. Larger groups have their own governing bodies, all the way up to the national and international level.
But in the end, the ONLY thing which the citizens have going for them if their government goes to far is to apply force in return, whether by peaceful protests, law suits, or whatever...all the way up to, and including, armed rebellion. That is their right...as government is supposed to be OF the People, BY the people, and FOR the people.

And it is clearly stated in our Declaration of Independence that it is the duty of the people to remove, by force, a government that is not properly exercising their role for the people. It is also very clear in the Federalist Papers why our founding fathers thought that the 2nd Amendment was an important right to confirm (not confer) so that it would be inviolate for future generations.

Laws cannot be written based on the statistical outliers of Human behavior. The result is outrageous injustice done in the name of "public safety" for a society that has already crumbled before violence.
“Laws that criminalize conduct not wrong in itself [malum prohibitum] to prevent crime before it occurs make the behavior of criminals [or psychos] the measure of the rights and scope of liberty that the law will permit to the innocent. Assault weapons [sic] are dangerous in the hands of criminals, therefore, no one shall have them. Such laws tell the law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the lawless. That the law will permit the innocent to have only such rights and liberties as criminals will allow.”

As far as defense against tyranny, the RKBA is the final piece in the balance of power in the design of our government. It reflects the commitment of the Federal Government to abide by its constitutional duties and limitations on its power over the people, who are the sole source of its powers. It further recognizes the importance of an armed citizenry, armed people who will support and protect their constitutional government.
