Most cops are good people trying to do a hard job, whether it be from stress, or intolerance built up from repeated exposure to the worst of society. All to often some officers forget that the majority of people are innocent of any real crimes and should be afforded respect until it is no longer warranted. It is not always necessary to be abrasive and unreasonable with even those who are criminals. By all means take precautions, be prudent, but give people a chance too!!!

Miami does have a high rate of violent crime and responding ready for a violent confrontation is pretty standard for a burglary in progress call. Still, it could have been handled better.

While I am Pro cop on a lot of things there are the bad cases that I wont let them get a free pass. It isn't all law enforcement and more often than not it is the exception to the rule. In this case such a large show of force tells me a few things, like the 911 caller said they were armed. The fact that when children were identified they did not back off or deescalate says they have improper training in the continuum of force.

While adrenalin and tunnel vision can account for the myopic refusal to check ID's confirm what is being said it also brings up the question of department wide training. Reading this you had several police members who don't have a level head on their shoulders. One in a department is bad enough but to send 6 or 7 of them at one target with 4 kids... All the above one might dismiss as they received bad info and over reacted but to have them blow them off at the Station and then try and throw it back in their face.... This is a Department that needs some reform / re-education on what their job is. They also should get some training on how to de-escalate a situation especially when kids are in the line of fire.

I can't say that I disagree. There are all together too many people that get into police work because they are looking for an opportunity to push other people around. Abuse of authority. There really is no excuse for keeping someone at gunpoint when they are not behaving in a threatening manner and refusal to check the ID is just crazy. Checking the ID would be the first thing to do in most contact situations.
I don't understand the behavior and I agree it looks like a combination of bad policy and bad training.
