When I was really little, about 4, som friends of my parents brought us back an Alaskan Malamute Pup who we named Timber.. (he was conceived in Alaska in the wild.. yes he was a malamute wolf hybrid.. Timber stayed by me consistently. As much as he could.. When he wanted to do s’thing.. like dig.. he’d grab my coat sleeve or trouser leg
And lead me wher he wanted to explore....so I’d stand there and watch.. he’d sit there and look at me and yip.. I’d still be looking and he pulled my hand down to the hole. .. that darn dog wanted me to dig with him! We had a picket fence and a board was loose.. he didn’t try getting out but another dog wanted Timber’s knuckle bone.
That dog was a bit big for that hole and kept trying to push its way through.. Timber being too young to understand did figure that dog wanted that bone... that dog pushed and pushed but wasn’t getting through.... Timber got tired of it all, he wanted todo s’thing different... but he didn’t want to leave that bone with that dog around so Timber grabs that bone and drags it around the corner of our house. and goes and lies under the back porch .. and snoozes..
That dog is persistent.. he wants Timber’s bone .. he backs up and leaps but doesn’t quite make it and gets hung up on it.. Timber gets out from under the porch and goes over to the dog hung up on the pickets.. and licks it’s face goes back over and lays there knawing on his bone... watching the other dog.. somebody finally big enough helps the other dog off the picket and carries it back over to it’s master’s home.. that dog didn’t come around for a while.. about a month I reckon.. .. Timber took to following me to school.. there were some bullies in the area.. zone was a little bigger, maybe older. He got in my face and wanted my milk money.. Mom premade arrangement with the teacher and had visited school and prepaide for the week.. so I was taken care of..
the kid didn’t know that.. I don’t know what direction Timber came from.. but he knocked that bully off his feet and stood over him growling.. He had that tumble in his throat... I grabbed Timber by his collar and pulled him back.. that kid got up and ran off.. He seemed to of messed himself.. Timber was sniffing where he lay.. .. I didn’t see him at school Monday either and it was Thursday when it happened I think.. on Tuesday, the dog warden was at our house.. he didn’t take Timber.. Mr.Malchowski said the boy’s mother signed a complaint
Saying Timber attacked her son.. I said that’s a lie.. Timber was protecting me.. that kid was prodded by his older brothers
(They ran off also). Mr. M got another paper out of his portfolio..
I signed(I had a legible nice signature for a 6 year old kid) and Mom signed it too.. Officer M said to just keep Timber in the yard prob’ly on a chain .. Timber didn’t like that word.. So Mom walked with me to the edge of school property and Timber came along on the leash.. that kid was there and Timber knew him(by that smell?)...
Timber wanted to growl but he just bared his fangs at him.. Mom turned and they went home.. two days later the County Sheriff Deputy came by.. dad was there .. he was on the local Police Force in the Village Of Wayne, Mi. (It’s incorporated now). So the deputy and dad and mom had coffee and the deputy said mom violated a restraining order.. Mom said ofcr M never said anything about a restraining order.. The deputy went out to his car and returned saying Mom was correct.. it hadn’t been issued by the court until2 days later, so Ofcr M didn’t know about it either.. He made some notes in his book.. So he didn’t take Timber..
Well the big day came to go to court.. We even brought Timber on his leash.. and guess who wasn’t there? Yup, the mother(plaintiff) and the alleged attempted junior thug. We had to go all the way to Detroit because Mom pressed charges against the the mother for
Her son’s juvenile delinquency (the others should have been there also)
The Judge issued a warrant for the mother’s arrest and the juvenils be placed in custody at the youth Home .. Wow felons ! Just like on Perry Mason ! My favorite show ! I didn’t understand much and asked dad a lot of questions.. He explained some liberties are taken in making the show but it’s kind of close. I’ve gone to court with him
When he had to give testimony at a trial.. not as exciting as Perry Mason.. no crazy guy pulling a gun and shooting up the court room..
so the Judge in Detroit cancelled the restraining order, He did give me a talk about controlling timber Better.. (wth.. my statement was right three.. I didn’t get to talk because the plaintiffs [now felons]
didn’t show and now on the lam..
(Wth does a baby sheep have to do with it all[jus’ kidding]). One night s’body tried to poison Timber.. Timber only eats what we give him..
so he wouldn’t touch the meat that he seen a stranger put in his dish ..
We had Timber a few more years and took him out to Grandma’s... Then the milkman took him up to his cabin up north. The Milkman was kind and we think his brother was the mean one.. ..Timber broke loose and ran all the way home .. he had some bruises and his feet raw from the run He stayed with us Intil he got better.. We said you can’t take Timber until your brother leaves and doesn’t come back.. we wanted to hear him tell his brother to his face in front of us.. so we drove and met them halfway to Cadillac from where we lived in Wayne, Mi. At a later date The brother attacked Timber who was ‘supposed to be ‘ on his chain..Timber got him when he turned his back.. Timber killed him..
The court said the milkman was guilty of negligent homicide.. Milkman states he knew The brother would try to hurt Timber.. restraining order wouldn’t stop him.. so the milkman unsnapped timber’s chain to give him a fair chance.. in case the brother came back. The jury was sympathetic to the dog’s situation but did reduce the charge to negligent homicide .. the court wanted 2d degree murder against the mikman(he’d already done a year in prison, So the judge commuted that and added 6 months probation.. They ordered Timber destroyed when the Vet said he believed that Timber was a wolf-Malamute hybrid.. their mistake .. letting Timber go home Crome confinement at the Vet’s kennel.. The milkman and Timber took off to Canada up through the U.P. Mi. Into Minn, then Canada. There were not as many border crossing in the very early 60s.. I only hope Timber got to live out his years happy in the North Of Canada.. He only defended himself... from a human animal..

There are some dogs I’d rather buddy up with instead of some humans... dogs only ask that you respect them as they do you.
Give them their space..(alone time).. dogs can sense when s’thing bothers you so when they nudge you and get close, don’t shake them off.. they’re trying to give you some comfort.
