I can't judge what happened, but personally I would leave it to the court, the judge, and to the jury.

While I don't condone the shooting, I do understand better than many of the posters on here what the dangers of this situation entail.
I have over 31 years as a law enforcement officer and have seen people pull guns, knives, etc out from hidden areas of their bodies faster than you can respond.
To the ones who like to say police are scared, I can't speak for each encounter like this, but I can say you weren't there.
You aren't there when you get a call of someone with a gun or knife. Police officers aren't private citizens, they can't or shouldn't just decide that they aren't going to risk their life and just ignore it.
You aren't there when you see the person or when you make the approach. If a Police officer sees something like a large bulge or some action that is suspicious, he can't/shouldn't turn around and walk away thinking that it is ok if someone else dies instead.
You aren't there if the police officer doesn't fire or make an arrest when he should have. In the press, they are blamed because someone else was injured or killed.
If you don't believe that someone who plays video games knows what combat is like, then why would you think you know what police work is when you haven't done it?

This cop wasnt there by himself. You telling me that man crying is a threat? MAYBE if he was by himself but there were other police there with him. Stop it.

Before you try telling me what it is like to be in a situation like that, tell me how many years you have as a street police officer.
If the answer is little or none, you don't know what you are talking about. Watching things on TV, movies, and videos gives you as much experience and credibilty as playing army video games and thinking you know what combat is like.

I have only a few years experience working as an MP in the army. But I know from that experience, and many like them since, that Police Officers the world over are now better trained, better experienced, and yes sometimes they do make mistakes. This officer did make some improper comments and lost his job over it. But he should not lose his liberty because when it came to that part of the mission he acted appropriately.
